This article seeks to analyze the awkward relationship between oral history and historiography in South Korea and suggest a productive future vision for both fields. In order to do so, the author illustrates how oral historical researches carried out by Korean historians challenge Korean historiography. There is a general consensus among Korean historians engaged in oral history that oral historical researches have produced a 'history from the below' by uncovering unheard voices and forgotten histories. A review of oral historical researches conducted by Korean historians since 2000 indicated that as for studies on the Korean War, an alternative way of writing history was employed. These researches elevated the ordinary people who had been marginalized to main agents of history. Moreover, they revealed that research topics and subjects have been diversified in different historical fields, such as women's history, labor history, local history and Korean diaspora history. Despite such achievements, there are some issues stemming from the uneasiness between oral history and historiography. These issues were discussed in light of three elements: historians’ insufficient understanding of orality, difficulties that they face when dealing with subjectivity, and establishment of relationship between history and memory. Lastly, the author emphasizes the connecting role that researchers of modern Korean history could play in ameliorating the awkward relationship between the two fields.

이 논문은 한국에서 역사학과 구술사의 어색한 관계를 진단하고 그 어색함을 만들 고 있는 핵심적인 쟁점들을 논의하여 둘 사이의 관계에 대한 전망을 하고자 한다. 이 를 위하여 우선 구술사가 한국 역사학에 어떤 도전을 하였는지를 논의한다. 구술사를 연구하는 역사학자들은 대체로 구술사가 한국근현대사 연구에서 문헌이 드러내지 못 하는 경험들을 드러내어 아래로부터의 역사쓰기를 하고 있다고 보고 있다. 필자는 2000년 이후 역사학자들이 배출한 구술사 연구 현황을 살펴보고 그 성과를 분석하였 는데, 한국전쟁 관련 연구에서는 공식역사와는 다른 대안적 역사쓰기가 이루어졌고, 여성사, 지방사, 노동사, 재외한인사 등에서 역사 연구의 주제와 소재가 다양하게 되 고 소외되었던 평범한 사람들을 역사의 주체로 드러나게 하였다. 이러한 역사학계에 서 구술사 연구 성과에도 불구하고 필자는 역사학과 구술사의 어색한 관계가 드러내 는 쟁점들을 발견하였는데, 그것은 구술성에 대한 역사학자들의 이해 부족, 주관성에 대한 역사학자들의 어려움, 그리고 역사와 기억과의 관계 설정이라는 세 부분으로 논 의하였다. 마지막으로 필자는 역사학과 구술사가 어색한 관계를 생산적으로 만들어 가는데 한국근현대사 연구자들의 연결고리 역할을 강조하였다.
