Oral history researches began to emerge in South Korea during the 1980s dictatorship. Since then, the Korean Oral History Association was established in 2009 and the demand for oral history has steadily risen— which is paradoxical in today’s era of high literacy that boasts only about 2 percent of illiteracy rate in South Korea. There was not only an increase in research achievements but also an expansion of research areas that employ oral history methodology. Such a trend is likely to persist for the time being. Oral history research has become an important basis for supplementing or substituting historical facts with regard to Korean modern history. It has also contributed to criticizing and replacing misconceptions and monolithic historical interpretations. Furthermore, it has played a crucial role in revitalizing regional studies, which used to be marginalized. Besides, it is indispensable to promoting the research of women's history that has been invisible in the existing patriarchal history. Oral history research is not without shortcomings, such as problems inherent in memory and the derived issues of reliability. Nonetheless, researchers have explored the contextual facts of the materials and developed the research ethics with a democratic and reflective attitude, which was lacking in the prior research of Korean modern history.

한국에서 구술사 연구가 등장하기 시작한 것은 1980년대 독재정권 하에서였다. 그 이래로 21세기 문맹자의 비율이 2% 안팎밖에 되지 않는 현재와 같은 비문맹 시대 에 역설적으로 한국구술사학회(2009년)가 발족했고, 구술사 연구에 대한 수요는 점증 하고 있다. 연구 업적의 증가는 말할 것도 없고, 구술사 방법론이 활용되는 연구 영역 도 확산되고 있고 당분간 이러한 추세는 계속될 것으로 보인다. 구술사 연구는 한국 현대사와 관련하여 역사적 사실을 보충하거나 대체하는 데 중 요한 근거가 되었다. 또한 구술사 연구는 잘못된 통념이나 획일적인 역사를 비판하고 대체하는 데에도 기여했다. 나아가 구술사는 과거에 비활성화되어 있었던 지역사 연 구를 활성화시키는 데 결정적인 역할을 했다. 또한 기존의 가부장적 역사에서 비가시 화되었던 여성사 연구를 진작시키는데 없어서는 안 될 역할을 하고 있다. 물론 구술사 연구는 기억의 문제나 그에 따른 신뢰도 문제와 같은 약점이 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 기존의 현대사 연구에서는 부족한 연구 과정의 민주성과 성찰적인 태도에 의해 자료 에 대한 맥락적 사실과 연구 과정에서의 연구 윤리 의식을 발전시켜오고 있다.
