This study aims to find out the learning behavior of elementary school students inside and outside of school and the factors affecting students' learning culture. To achieve these study purposes, the study proposed the following questions:First, how do elementary school students study in learning spaces inside and outside school? Second, the factors affecting students' learning culture, which is displayed inside and outside of school?To find the answers to these questions, this study designated long- and short-term study groups in elementary schools in an urban area and in a rural area, respectively. The results of the interviews are summarized as follows:First, the students' learning in school is composed of 4 features. These are understanding & memorizing oriented learning, learning with textbook, participation in study for fun & interests, and learning for good grades. On the other hand, students' learning outside of school has 3 features. These are repetition & memorizing‐oriented learning, boring homework, and learning at institute for good grades. Second, there are 4 internal school factors that affect learning. These are frame of hours & content of curriculum as learning mechanism, participation in learning by control on learning behaviors & hours, the learning atmosphere of requiring higher test grades, and homework that students do not like but should do. There are 3 external school factors as well. These are parents' over‐enthusiasm on the education, social awareness & practice prioritizing on grades, and scholarship‐oriented administrative & financial setup.

본 연구는 초등학생들의 학습행위가 학교 안과 밖에서 어떻게 이루어지고 있으며 그 영향 요인은 무엇인가를 밝히는데 그 목적을 두었다. 이를 위해 농촌과 도시의 두 초등학교를 대상으로 학습행위에 대한 관찰, 심층 면담, 개방형 자기 보고서 등을 통해 질적 분석을 하였다. 연구 결과 학생들의 학교 안 학습 행위는 이해와 암기 중심의 理暗式 學習, 교과서 따라 배우기, 재미 여부에 의한 학습 참여, 점수 따기 위한 공부 등으로 나타났으며, 학교 밖 학습행위는 싫증나고 재미없는 숙제, 성적 올리기 중심의 학원학습, 반복과 암기 위주의 暗反式 學習 등으로 이루어지고 있었다. 학습문화에 영향을 미치는 학교의 내적 영향 요인으로는 학습 운영 기제로서 교육과정과 시간의 틀, 학습 행동과 학습 시간의 통제를 통한 학습 참여, 보다 높은 시험 점수를 요구하는 학습 풍토, 하기 싫지만 해야 하는 숙제, 학교의 외적 영향 요인으로는 학부모의 과잉 교육열, 성적 제일주의적 사회 의식과 관행, 학력 관리 중심의 행․재정적 체제 등이 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다.
