Modern society is moving toward a knowledge based society and the need for career education is being more emphasized than ever. Therefore teacher's awareness of career education becomes significant for the student's career education. The purpose of this study was to serve as a basis for more efficient career education in the elementary school, by surveying the current trend of elementary school teacher's awareness of career education, their attitude toward it, and their view of career guidance. First of all, training opportunities for elementary school teachers must be expanded to raise their view of career education, because each teacher takes in charge of the whole curriculum by himself. To activate or improve career education, career education programs and materials should be developed and provided by running schools for research and model schools.

현대사회는 지식기반 사회로 접어들면서 진로교육의 필요성이 보다 절실하게 요구되고 있다. 따라서 학생들의 진로교육을 위해서는 무엇보다 교사들의 진로교육에 대한 인식의 중요성에 비추어 본 연구에서는 초등학교 교사들의 진로교육관을 조사․분석하여 진로인식 단계에 있는 초등학교 학생들의 진로지도 방안을 제시하였다. 연구결과 진로인식 단계에 있는 초등학교 학생들에게 의도적이고 체계적인 진로교육을 위해서는 무엇보다 전 과목을 담당하고 있는 초등교사들의 진로교육관을 높이기 위한 연수기회를 확대 해야 할 것이며, 연구학교, 시범학교 운영 등을 통한 진로교육 프로그램과 학습자료를 개발 보급하여 진로교육의 활성화 내지는 질적 향상을 위한 방법 및 대책이 이루어져야 할 것이다. 초등학교에서의 진로교육은 공급자 중심의 진로교육이 아닌 수요자 중심의 진로지도가 이루어져야 할 것이다. 이를 위해 교사들의 진로의식의 함양과 진로지도 방안에 대한 끊임없는 연구, 그리고 교사양성기관에서의 진로교육을 위한 교육과정의 편성이 필요하다.
