This thesis attempts to examine a characteristic side of Japanese modernism literature through the characteristics of expressive techniques shown in the Modernist Yokomitsu Riichi‘s masterpiece Shanghai as a new sensation school and new psychological novel from a standpoint of discontinuity and continuity. The summed-up conclusions that were obtained by the analyzing and investigating processes in this paper are as follows: Firstly, it is revealed that not only the characteristics of expressive techniques in a new sensation school literature period but also the characteristics of expressive techniques in new psychological literature period are all mixed in the text of the novel Shanghai that is generally valued as a representative literary work of a new sensation school novels. Secondly, in order to exactly understand the literary world of Yokomitsu, it is needed for us to look at his new sensation school literature period and new psychological literature period not only from a discontinuous characteristics standpoint but also from a continuous one. Thirdly, it is possible for us to have more accurate understanding of a characteristic side of Japanese modernism literature by analyzing and examining the characteristics of his new sensation school literature period and new psychological literature period from a plural viewpoint such as discontinuous and continuous ones. By the above study results, the main accomplishment of this paper is to be able to have an overall re-examination not only over the modernistic characteristics of Yokomitsu Riichi, but also over the characteristic side of modernism literature that is contained in the history of Japanese modern literature.

본고는 모더니스트 요코미츠 리이치의 대표작 『상해(上海)』에 나타난 신감각파 및 신심리주의 소설로서의 표현기법적 특징을 통해 일본 모더니즘 문학의 특징적 일면을 단절과 연속이라는 관점에서 조망해보고자 하는 시도이다. 본고에서의 구체적인 분석, 고찰 과정을 통해 얻은 결론을 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 일반적으로 신감각파의 대표작으로 평가되는 『상해』라는 소설 텍스트 안에는 요코미츠의 신감각파 문학 시기 뿐 아니라 신심리주의 문학 시기의 표현기법적 특징이 혼재되어 나타난다. 둘째, 요코미츠의 문학 세계를 정확히 파악하기 위해서는 그의 신감각파 문학 시기와 신심리주의 문학 시기를 단절적인 특징에서뿐만 아니라 연속적인 특징의 관점에서도 바라볼 필요가 있다. 셋째, 요코미츠의 신감각파 시기 및 신심리주의 시기를 단절과 연속이라는 다원적 관점에서 분석, 고찰해 봄으로써 일본 모더니즘 문학의 특징적 일면에 대해 좀 더 정확히 파악할 수 있다. 이상의 연구 결과를 통해, 요코미츠 리이치의 모더니스트적 특성에 대해서는 물론, 일본 근대문학사에서 차지하는 모더니즘 문학의 특징적 일면에 대해서도 재조망해 볼 수 있었던 것이 본고의 주요한 성과이다.
