By examining Joseph Edkins’ (1823~1905) research on the Chinese language, the present study elucidates aspects of the study of Chinese by Westerners in the modern era and examines its significance in the history of Western scholarship on Chinese. As Edkins’ studies on Chinese, the seven following works have been selected as the objets of research. : A Grammar of Colloquial Chinese as exhibited in the Shanghai Dialect, A Grammar of the chinese colloquial language commonly called the Mandarin Dialect, Progressive Lessons in the Chinese Spoken Language: with lists of common words and phrase, and appendix containing the laws of tones in the Peking Dialect, A Vocabulary of Shanghai Dialect, China's Place in Philology, Introduction to the Study of the Chinese Characters, Evolution of the Chinese Language. He compiled a grammar book and a glossary each for the Shanghai and Mandarin dialects. As for Edkins’ study of grammar, it was characterized by an emphasis on both the sounds and a comparison among dialects. In the case of his research on lexicons, the glossary of the Mandarin dialect classifies and lists words based on their meanings in Chinese, and the one of the Shanghai dialect is characterized by adopting the format of an English-Chinese dictionary. In the three other volumes of research, Edkins compared world languages with Chinese, discussed the characteristics of Chinese characters, and, through all of this, discussed changes in human languages and the significance of Chinese among them. This aimed at proving that Chinese likewise had originated from the same, single source of the world’s languages. Edkins’ study of Chinese is significant, first, for synthesizing and critically inheriting existing research by other Western missionaries. Second, he attempted contacts between Western linguistics and the Chinese language by applying the methods of contemporary Western comparative linguistics to the latter. This differed from other missionaries’ research on Chinese, which was for practical purposes, and served to transmit knowledge of Chinese to the West. Third, Edkins absorbed not only traditional Chinese linguistics but also contemporary linguistic research by the Chinese.

본 논문은 조셉 에드킨스 (Joseph Edkins, 1823~1905)의 중국어 연구를 개괄하고 서양의 중국어 연구사에 있어서 그의 중국어 연구의 특징, 의의를 고찰하는 것을 목표로 한다. 에드킨스는 베이징 방언, 상하이 방언을 섭렵하며 각각의 문법서, 어휘집을 출간하였으며 세계의 언어와 중국어의 관계, 인류의 언어의 변천과 그 안에서 중국어의 의의에 대해 고찰했다. 그는 당시 유럽의 비교언어학의 방법을 수용했으며 궁극적으로 《성서》에서 말하는 언어 유일 기원론을 입증하는 것을 목표로 했다. 그는 서양의 언어와 중국어는 동일한 기원에서 말미암은 것이며 서양의 언어와 상이한 중국어의 특징은 중국어가 기원언어에 근접한 언어로 상이한 발전단계에 있기 때문이라 주장했다. 에드킨스의 중국어 연구는 서양의 중국어 연구가 중국에서 활동하는 선교사들의 중국어 교육을 위한 실용적 차원에서 벗어나 유럽의 언어학에 중국어에 관한 정보를 제공하는 역할을 하도록 이끈 점에서 의의가 있다. 또한 그의 연구서를 통해 당시 중국의 중국어 연구 양상을 살펴볼 수 있음을 밝혔다.
