Homer portrays the crisis of Ithaca by disclosing the evil nature of the suitors. The discussion helps us to understand the quintessence of their evil deeds as a total destruction of human values, not a mere greed on the hero’s possessions and his wife. For a better understanding, it will be discussed through the comparison with Polyphemus who shares many similarities with the suitors. Once their goal is disclosed, we readers view a wider spectrum of the meaning of Odysseus’ revenge on them, which is fundamentally different from any other triumph of a long missing husband in traditional return songs. As de facto rulers of Ithaca (1.394), they ignore gods and men, neglecting all the rules that govern human conduct (1.405–12, 2. 85–128, 2.178–207, 2.243–56). They blur the boundaries between men and gods. When the suitors are first introduced in the Telemachy, they behave as if they were gods, beyond human limits (1.159–60). They provoke divine anger (1.224–9). Beyond a mere matter of recovery of a throne or restoration of oikos, the confrontation between Odysseus and the suitors should be seen on a deeper level: this is a conflict between two incompatible sets of values, which cannot end unless one or the other party is exterminated.
