The purpose of this study is to investigate the history of the “religion curriculum” that the Korean government has adopted and to analyze and discuss religious education from a Christian-education perspective. In 1992, the Korean religion curriculum first appeared in the sixth curriculum and it was revised in the seventh(1997), 2007, 2011, 2012, and 2015. Starting from the sixth curriculum, this study will examine the development of the religion curriculum from the first to the fifth curriculum and from the sixth curriculum to the current religion curriculum. Then this study will analyze and discuss the religion curriculum from a Christian-education perspective based on the following questions: 1) Is the nature and purpose of religious education in schools personal or social? 2) Which type of religious education is emphasized in the religion curriculum? Through the discussion of the first question, I have discovered that the Korean religion curriculum gradually emphasizes "the understanding of the various religious phenomenon in society and prevention of religious conflict(social-cultural level)" rather than "the essential role of religion to individuals(personal level)." Also, through the discussion of the second question, out of four types of religious education within Korean religion curriculum(education of religion, education about religion, religious education, personality development religious education) it has become clear that the "education about religion" is being strengthened even though "education of religion" and "education about religion" go side by side. On the basis of religion curriculum, this study is proposing a new alternative to religious education. In other words, this study diagnoses the reality of religious education in Korean schools and seeks a holistic alternative to restore the essence of religion in education.

본 연구는 한국정부에서 고시한 “종교교과 교육과정”을 역사적으로 탐구하고 이를 바탕으로 학교의 종교교육을 기독교교육적으로 논의하고 비평한 연구이다. 한국의 종교교과 교육과정은 1992년 제6차 교육과정에서 처음 문서로 고시되기 시작하여 제7차(1997), 2007년 재개정, 2011 년/2012년 재개정, 2015년 재개정 교육과정에서 종교교과 교육과정이 고시되었다. 이에 본 연구는 제6차 교육과정을 기점으로 해서, 제1차 교육과정에서 제5차 교육과정까지의 종교교육과, 그 다음 제6차 교육과정부터2015년 재개정 교육과정까지의 종교교과교육과정을 고찰하였다. 또한 본 연구는 종교교과 교육과정을 다음과 같은 질문을 토대로 논의하고 기독교교육적으로 비평하였다. 즉 “첫째, 종교교육의 성격과 목적이개인적 차원이냐 혹은 사회문화적 차원인가? 둘째, 종교교과의 내용은 어떤 유형의 종교교육이 강조되고 있는가?” 이다. 첫 번째 질문에 대한 논의를 통해, 한국 종교교과 교육과정은 시대가 흐를수록 ‘종교가 개인에게 주는 본질적 역할(개인적 차원)’보다는 ‘사회에서의 다양한 종교현상을 이해하고 종교적 갈등을 예방하는 차원(사회문화적 차원)’이 강조되고 있음을 발견하였다. 또한 두 번째 질문에 대한 논의를 통해, 한국 종교교과 교육과정은종교교육의 4가지 유형(신앙교육적 종교교육, 종교학적 종교교육, 종교성 교육, 인성교육적 종교교육) 가운데, ‘신앙교육적 종교교육’과 ‘종교학적 종교교육’ 유형이 병행구조를 띠고 있지만 시대가 흐를수록 ‘종교학적 종교교육’이 강화되고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구는 이와 같은 종교교과 교육과정의 현황을 토대로 학교의 종교교육의 새로운 대안을 제언하였다. 결국 본 연구는 “종교교과 교육과정”을 토대로 한국의 학교 교육 지형에서의 종교교육의 현실을 진단하고 교육의 종교적 본질을 회복할 수 있는 대안을 모색하고자 하였다.
