Conversion is a prerequisite subject of study for the ministry of evangelism as well as a religious experience in general. For conversion as a process of being a Christian becomes the goal which evangelism should pursue. While religious conversion denotes a significant experience for human transformation, this paper attempts to explore conversion with regard to evangelistic perspective in particular. Christian conversion parallels general conversion experiences in that it also seeks the integration and maturity of self in a holistic sense. But Christian conversion distinguishes itself from general conversion in that it orients towards personal relationship with the transcendent One. The process and characteristics of Christian conversion offers some useful insights to the ministry of evangelism as the key task of the church. First, this paper considers the temporal aspect of conversion. Does conversion take place radically or gradually? How we conceive of conversion in a temporal sense preliminarily affects how we shape the ministry of evangelism in a concrete way. Second, this paper notes the componental aspect of conversion. By componental aspect I mean the essential elements which comprise the authentic Christian conversion. This will help us understand the meaning of being a true Christian. Third, the social aspect of conversion is connected to the conception of evangelism as the communal task. Conversion cannot be understood purely in an individual sense apart from social settings within which individuals are placed. Rather conversion is more likely to happen in continuing encounters with a certain community or relationships. This will awaken us to the corporate identity of the church. Fourth, three orientations to Christian conversion will be dealt with: socialization, liturgical process, and personal decision. These orientations are connected to three modes of the gospel transmission. Multifaceted understanding of conversion with a view to promoting evangelism, as this paper proposes, will guide the church in embracing its role as witness to the gospel in a deeper and richer sense.

회심은 일반적인 종교 경험일 뿐 아니라 교회의 전도 사역을 위해서도 중요한 선행 연구 과제가 된다. 그리스도인 됨의 과정으로서 회심은 복음 전도가 지향하는 목표이기 때문이다. 종교적 회심은 인간에게 의미 있는 변화의 경험이지만, 본 논문은 전도적 관점에서 기독교적 회심의 주제들에 주목한다. 기독교적 회심은 일반 종교적 회심과 비교할 때 전인적 자아의 통합과 성숙을 추구한다는 면에서 비슷하지만, 초월적 존재와의 인격적 관계를 지향한다는 점에서 뚜렷한 차이를 지닌다. 기독교적 회심의 과정과 특성은 교회의 핵심 사역인 전도에 중요한 교훈을 제공한다. 본 논문에서는 회심을 이해함에 있어서, 먼저 시간적 측면을 고려한다. 회심이 급진적으로 일어나는가, 또는 점진적으로 일어나는가를 판단하는 것은 실제적으로 어떻게 전도해야 할지에 대한 선행 전제가 된다. 둘째로, 본 논문은 회심의 구성적 측면을 살펴 볼 것이다. 구성적 측면이란 온전한 회심을 규정하는 본질적 요소들이다. 이는 진정한 그리스도인 됨의 실체를 이해하는데 도움을 준다. 셋째로, 회심의 사회적 측면은 전도의 공동체성을 이해하는데 도움을 준다. 회심은 순전히 개인적인 탐구와 결정이 아니라, 공동체와의 조우를 통해서 이루어지며 이는 교회의 정체성과 역할을 환기시켜준다. 넷째로, 회심 경로(사회화, 예전적 과정, 인격적 결단)에 대한 이해는 회심을 일으키는 매개적 측면들을 조명하게 해준다. 이는 전도를 위한 복음의 전달 방식과도 자연스럽게 연결된다. 회심에 대한 이와 같은 다각적 이해는 전도 사역의 중요한 측면들을 더욱 깊이 있고 풍성하게 탐구하도록 도움을 줄 것이다.
