This study explores how light evokes the perceptual experience of viewers through the work of James Turrell. It focuses on the viewer's visual experiences, reacting to light and space. Turrell's work emphasizes the perceptional experiences of humans by combining immateriality with materiality. In other words, his work leads to the phenomenological perceptual experience of the viewer facing light within a space shaped by materiality. The present study reveals the meaning of perceptional experience by analyzing his minimalist works. Turrell's works, most of all, provide viewers with time to meditate and to gain a subjective experience by utilizing high technology along with the minimalized structures of the works, which maximizes the effects of light. The illumination and the spaces he composes become one complete entity when advanced technology maximizes psychological experience. Applying natural and artificial light from the sun, electric light through a projector and LEDs, his works capture the viewer's attention and concentration on the act of watching itself. As a result, viewers can participate in surreal experiences in their psychological and mental realms through the obstruction and superposition of sensitivity and the sublime in a visual sense. While Turrell's early works aim to evoke viewers' surreal experiences of infinite space in a physically limited space through an illusory effect of light, ignoring perspective, his recent works aim to reflect the unlimited extensiveness of nature. His recent work at the site of the Roden Crater provide, the viewer with a feeling of floating in space, which allows them self-recognition in infinite space. This is an existential time for the viewers to face and experience the vastness of nature. By maximizing the effects of the psychological changes of viewers within a spatial structure, Turrell's works drive them to meditate to thus reinforce self-consciousness in infinite space.

본 논문은 빛의 예술가로 잘 알려진 제임스 터렐(James Turrell)의 작품을 통해서 어떻게 빛이 관람자에게 지각체험을 불러일으키는지 살펴보는 것이다. 그의 작품은 빛과 공간에 반응하는 관람자의 시각적 경험에 기반하고 있다. 터렐은 비물질인 빛에 물질성을 삽입하여 빛을 인지하는 관람자의 시지각적 경험을 유도한다. 이 연구에서는 터렐의 이러한 특징을 관람자의 지각체험이라는 측면에서 분석하였다. 자신을 자각하는 과정이 터렐 작품의 의의라고 볼 수 있다. 빛을 표현하려는 작가들은 많았지만 터렐에게 빛은 빛 자체이며 다른 무엇으로 대체할 수는 완벽함이다. 터렐은 그러한 빛에 물질성을 부여하여 조각적 사물로 보이게 하거나 무한히 확장되는 공간으로 보여주었다. 먼저, 터렐은 미니멀한 형식과 테크놀로지를 사용하여 관람자에게 사색적인 시간과 주관적인 경험을 제공한다. 이것은 정교한 기술과 시각적 착시를 통해 가능하다. 그의 작품에서는 프로젝터, 강한 조명, LED 등을 이용한 빛에서 부터 햇빛 등의 자연적인 빛까지 모두 중요한 요소로 작용한다. 이렇게 만들어진 효과는 관람자가 작품을 본다는 행위에 집중하도록 유도한다. 결국 관람자는 터렐이 연출한 빛의 공간과 시각적 착시에 의해 심리적이고 정신적인 그 무엇을 이끌어내고 이후에 초월적인 감수성과 숭고를 경험하게 된다. 그의 초기 작품이 공간 구조와 원근법적인 요소들을 의도적으로 숨김으로써 무한한 공간감을 체험하게 하였다면, 최근의 작품은 대자연이 주는 거대한 규모를 경험할 수 있도록 설계되어 있다. 분화구 정상에 있는 관람자는 우주 공간에 떠 있는 느낌을 받으며 그 과정에서 자기 자신에게 몰입한다. 이것은 관람자가 거대한 자연을 마주하며 느끼는 실존적 시간인 것이다. 그러므로 터렐의 작품은 관람자의 심리와 공간구조를 이용하여 관람자를 명상으로 유도하고 자신의 내면에 집중하여 우주 속 자신의 존재를 자각하도록 만든다.
