The purpose of this paper is to analyze the anatomical wax sculpture treasures of the 18th century, which reproduce the human body, located at the museum La Specola in Florence, Italy, the first public museum which is also an eclectic natural history museum, as the concepts of the body were and continue to be shaped by visual representations. Gaetano Giulio Zumbo, the Sicilian wax modeler, invented anatomical models in colored wax during a collaborative process with the French surgeon Guillaume Desnoues in the late 17th century. Interest in anatomical wax models spread throughout Europe during the 18th century, first in Bologna with Giovanni Manzolini and Gaetano Giulio Zumbo, and then in Florence with Felice Fontana and Clemente Susini. Parts of the section of the museum are dedicated to anatomical models produced by Zumbo to Susini, for models such as the Anatomical Venus overlap different historical, social and cultural viewpoints of the human body as a reconstructed mechanical system that influences the progress of medical science and as a representation of artistic expression.
