Hwanghwajip is the result of combining Joseon’s aim and Ming dynasty envoys’ political aim. Joseon, through Hwanghwajip, wanted to prove the level of Joseon’s culture and to have Ming dynasty recognize her distinctive status differentiated from other nations neighboring Ming; and Ming dynasty envoys wanted Ming dynasty court to recognize themselves as good governors through Hwanghwajip published in Joseon. Hwanghwajip seems to have helped to reach those two different aims. Although the publication of Hwanghwajip consumed almost all best representative writers of Joseon of the time, their poems and proses implied various limits because their poems and proses recorded in Hwanghwajip were entirely to rhyme lines in reciprocation for the poems of Ming dynasty envoys. Thus, Joseon writers’ poems in Hwanghwajip were basically for formal perfection with limited creativity. From such a perspective, Joseon writer’s poems were of limited literary and artistic value. Especially, since poems in Hwanghwajip were not for literary achievement but for a nation’s political aim, their limits must have become even more limited. However, as the subjects of creating those poems were best writers of Joseon of the time, and as the writers attempted to have their literary achievements be revealed and be recognized through evaluating the poems given and taken between Ming dynasty envoys and themselves, the literary value of Hwanghwajip should be evaluated within the consideration of the aim for publishing Hwanghwajip, of the consciousness of Joseon’s writers of the time, and of the unique situation of Hwanghwajip, as well as the consideration of the unique circumstances of the writers creating poems and proses in Hwanghwajip. Otherwise, every evaluation on the literary value of Hwanghwajip would lose its own validity.

『皇華集』은 조선의 의도와 명나라 사신들의 정치적 목적이 결합한 결과물이다. 조선은 『황화집』을 통해 조선의 문화적 수준을 밝히고 이를 통해 명나라로부터 주변의 여타 국가와는 다른 차별적 지위를 인정받고 싶어 했으며, 조선에 사행 온 명나라 사신들은 조선에서 간행된 『황화집』을 통해 황제와 명나라 조정으로부터 자신을 善政官, 牧民官으로 인정받고 싶어 했는데, 각기 다른 두 가지 목적의 달성에 『황화집』이 적지 않은 도움이 되었다고 보인다.『황화집』의 간행에는 당대 조선의 대표적인 문인들이 거의 모두 투입되었지만, 그들의 詩文은 다양한 한계를 지닌다. 그것은 『황화집』에 수록되어 있는 그들의 시문이 전적으로 명나라 사신의 시에 대한 次韻과 和答으로 이루어졌기 때문이다. 따라서 『황화집』에 수록되어 있는 조선 문인들의 시는 기본적으로 창조성이 제한된 형식적 완벽성에 치중한 시가 될 수밖에 없었다. 그런 점에서 조선 문인들의 시는 근본적으로 문학성, 예술성이 제한된 시라고 볼 수밖에 없다. 특히 『황화집』에 수록된 시가 문학적 성취를 목적으로 하는 것이 아니라 국가의 정치적 목적을 달성하기 위한 수단이었다는 점에서 그 한계는 더욱 커졌을 것이다. 하지만 그 시문의 창작 주체가 당대 조선 최고의 문인들이었고, 그들이 명나라 사신들과 주고받은 시의 평가를 통해 그 자신의 문학적 성가를 분명하게 인정받고 드러내려 했었다는 점에서 『황화집』의 문학적 가치의 검토는 『황화집󰡕의 편찬 의도와 가치, 그리고 당대 조선 문인들이 가지고 있었던 의식과 함께 『황화집』이라는 문집의 특수한 상황과 『황화집』 소재 시문을 창작했던 창작자들의 특수한 처지에 대한 고려가 있어야만 할 것이다. 그렇지 않다면 『황화집』의 문학적 가치에 대한 어떠한 평가도 그 자체의 타당성을 상실할 수밖에 없으리라 보인다.
