This paper aims to reveal the process of the formation of Japga Gombo-Taryeong Saseol and the causes for the formation of Saseol. First, Gombo-Taryeong originated from Saseol-Sijo “Badokbadok” included in a Collection of Gagokchang, and through “Eolgugeumgu” included in a Collection of Sijo, it was completed as Gombo-Taryeong included in a Collection of Japga. Later, the popularity of the Collections of Japga moved to gramophone records, and it is noted that Gombo-Taryeong was one of the Japga that continuously gained public popularity, released as a gramophone record, too. However, it is found that Gombo-Taryeong released as a gramophone record was characterized by a different singer, name of the genre and Saseol. In addition, judging from the fact that the present Gombo-Taryeong Saseol is different from those included in the Collections of Japga, it is presumed that the modified Gombo-Taryeong Saseol in the era of gramophone records had influences and was handed down as the present form. These changes in the public perceptions about ‘Gombo’ are also found in popular magazines through which we can find the public consciousness of the times. In the popular magazines of the times such as Gaebyeok or Byeolgeongon, articles about ‘Gombo’ were often put, and their main contents were making fun of Gombo or listing famous pockmarked people of the town or in Joseon. Reflecting the changes of public perceptions and preferences of the times, Japga Gombo-Taryeong was made as Saseol and even gramophone records were released. These are the representative examples showing that the variability and diversity of the Saseol of Japga were caused by public demands, which allow us to assume that such things happened in the era of gramophone records.

본고는 잡가 <곰보타령>의 사설 형성 과정과 그 원인에 대해 밝히고자 하였다. <곰보타령>은 가곡창 가집에 수록된 사설시조인 ‘바독바독’에 그 연원을 두고 시조창 가집에 수록된 ‘얽고검고’를 거쳐 잡가집의 <곰보타령>으로 완성되었다. 이후 잡가집에서 유성기 음반으로 대중들의 관심이 옮겨갔지만 <곰보타령>은 유성기 음반으로도 3회나 발매되어 지속적으로 대중의 인기를 끈 작품 가운데 하나였음을 알 수 있었다. 그러나 유성기 음반으로 발매된 <곰보타령>은 각각 사설이 다른 특징이 발견되었다. 유성기 음반의 사설 변이 특징 가운데 ‘당대 유명한 곰보를 열거하는 것’은 당시의 잡지에서도 발견할 수 있었다. 특히 󰡔개벽󰡕이나 󰡔별건곤󰡕과 같은 당시 인기 잡지에서는 ‘곰보’를 대상으로 한 기사를 자주 실었으며 곰보를 놀리거나 당시 경성 혹은 조선에서 유명한 곰보들을 열거하는 것을 주 내용으로 하고 있었다. 이는 유성기 음반 <곰보타령>의 사설 변이에서 발견된 특징과 같은 것으로 당시 잡가 사설 변이에 대중의 인식, 기호 변화가 반영된 것임을 보여준다. 이와 같은 사실은 잡가의 사설이 가지고 있는 변이성과 다양성이 대중의 요구에 기인하고 있음을 보여주는 사례이며, 유성기 음반의 시대에 이와 같은 사건이 일어났음을 짐작하게 해준다.
