- This study focuses on the lives of immigrants, especially the lives of children and young adults who are members of diaspora. A family’s decision to leave its native country is usually made by adults, so children and young adults are forced to accept the decision without an active role in making it. Cultural differences, difficulties with communication, sometimes discomfort at home and in their social life can lead to negative effects and shock for children and young adults. Youngju, the main character in An Na’s A Step from Heaven and, Jin, the main character in Gene Luen Yang’s American Born Chinese, show the discomfort and the harsh lives of immigrants, and the tough lives of children and young adults in American society. Domestic violence, isolation, and difficulties accepting a different culture make them feel terrible, but ironically help them grow up. Through painful experiences, they come to realize their true identity and also gain knowledge of how to live and survive in unfamiliar surroundings.
