This research paper considered the core of the Bodhisattva(菩薩) idea provided by Vimalakirti with the text 『Vimalakirti-nirdesa-Sutra(維摩詰所說經)』 translated by Kumārajīva(鳩摩羅什), then tried to illuminate its modern meaning critically. 『Vimalakirti-nirdesa-Sutra(維摩詰所說經)』 showed the Bodhisattva idea of Mahayana Buddhism(大乘佛敎) and the ideals of Layman Buddhism(在家佛敎) clearly through the wisdom of Prajñā(般若). The book was already respected as the representative writing of Mahayana sudden enlightenment(大乘頓敎). It had a strong influence on the formation of Zen thought because it connoted the idea of the non-dualistic middle path with the sunya viewpoint of (空觀) of Prajñā(般若). The interest of modern society on religion is decreasing as days go by. Buddhism pay attention to the value of the Buddhim and its thought in the real life rather than Pravrajita(出家) Buddhism. In spite of living in the secular society, the figure of Vimalakirti(維摩詰) with a pure and undefiled heart is very suggestive to Korean Buddhist world focusing on the Pravrajita(出家) Buddhism. Especially, there are the wisdom of non-dualistic middle path(中道不二), non-dualistic life of the clergy and the laity(僧俗不二) and the will of the realization of the actual pure land in his Bodhisattva(菩薩) idea. Nowadays, the reality of Korean Buddhism focusing on the Pravrajita(出家) is far from the true Bodhisattva(菩薩) idea, though Korean Buddhism pursues Mahayana Buddhism(大乘佛敎). The Bodhisattva(菩薩) idea of Vimalakirti(維摩詰) beyond the distinction with Pravrajita Buddhism(出家佛敎) and Layman Buddhism(在家佛敎) cures many problems of Korean Buddhism and suggests promising perspective of Korean Buddhism. In this paper I searched for the modern meaning of the Bodhisattva(菩薩) idea of Vimalakirti(維摩詰) with these three parts, solving trouble of dualism with non-dualistic thought, the new reformation of Buddhism focusing on laymen, and the realization of ideal community.

본고는 구마라습 역 『유마힐소설경』을 기본 텍스트로 하여 유마힐이 제시하고 있는 보살정신의 핵심을 검토한 후, 이러한 정신이 지니는 현대적 의미가 무엇인지를 비판적으로 고찰하고자 하는데 연구의 목적이 있다. 『유마경』은 반야의 지혜에 입각하여 대승불교의 보살정신과 재가불교의 이상을 분명하게 보여주고 있는 경전이다. 속세에 살면서도 청정함을 잃지 않는 유마힐의 삶의 모습은 출가위주의 한국불교계에 던지는 시사점이 아주 크다 하겠다. 유마힐의 보살정신 속엔 중도불이의 지혜, 승속불이의 삶, 현실정토의 구현의 의지가 담겨져 있다. 현재 출가중심의 한국불교의 현실은 대승불교를 추구하고 있음에도 불구하고, 진정한 보살정신과는 거리가 있다. 승가와 재가의 구분을 뛰어넘는 유마힐의 보살정신은 현재 한국불교의 많은 문제점을 치유하고 미래 한국불교가 나아가야 할 방향을 가리키는 나침판으로서 역할을 하기에 충분하다. 본고에서는 이러한 유마힐의 보살정신이 가지는 현대적 의의에 대하여 ‘불이(不二)적 사유에 의한 이분법적 갈등 치유’, ‘재가 중심의 새로운 불교 개혁’, ‘이상적 공동체의 구현’ 등으로 나누어 살펴보았다.
