The purpose of this study was to search for the ways to develop the skills domains in elementary social studies education in Korea, through analyzing the skills domains of elementary social studies textbooks in the U.S. Though Skills involving a process of collecting, organizing, and utilizing knowledge holds a key position as the objective of social studies, the skills domains had received poor treatments, and had not systematically applied to the curriculum and textbooks. As a result of analysis on elementary social studies textbooks in the U.S, they implies not only various skills domains and systematical taxonomy every publisher but also deepening and developing learning contents of a certain skill domain in each grade. Thus, we should include various skills domains and make systematical taxonomy of elementary social studies textbooks in Korea. Also, we need to sequence the skills domains in appropriate order considering learner’s level.

본 연구의 목적은 미국 초등학교 사회과 교과서에 제시되어 있는 기능 내용 분석을 통해 우리나라 초등사회과 기능 교육의 발전 방향을 모색하는데 있다. 기능이란 지식의 습득과 활용에 관련된 것으로 사 회과의 목표로서 매우 중요한 위치를 차지하지만, 그동안 기능에 관한 연구가 부족하였고, 교육과정 및 교 과서에서도 체계적으로 제시하지 못하였다. 연구 결과, 미국 초등학교 사회과 교과서는 다양한 기능 내용 을 제시하고 있었으며, 대분류와 하위 기능까지 출판사별 체계적인 분류 체계를 가지고 있었다. 또한, 세 부 기능을 학년이 올라감에 따라 심화 발전시켜 제시했다. 이와 같이 우리나라에서도 교과서에 기능 학습 의 다양성을 확보하고 체계적인 분류 기준을 마련해야 한다. 또한, 세부기능에 대한 계열화를 통해 학습 자의 수준을 고려하여 적절한 순서로 배열하는 것이 필요하다.
