The archives of European cities, above all those of Italian cities, hold a remarkable wealth of city administrative records from the later middle Ages. These records are in the form of books or registers in which ordinary governmental affairs such as trials, tax collections or council decisions were described. The fact, that administrative records were steady produced in the initial period of archives, suggests the mutual relationship between the accumulation of registers and the organization of archival institutions. In this article I first consider the origin of administrative records and the organization of archives in the Italian cities. I then examine closely the activities of custodian surrounding safekeeping and the use and loss of medieval records, focusing on the memo books of custodians and the medieval inventories in the archives of Lucca and Bologna. Through this examination, I would like to reveal the specific conception of and attitude to documents by city officials and medieval citizens.

유럽 도시들의 문서고, 그 중에서 특히 이탈리아 도시들의 문서고는 중세 후기 이래 놀라울 정도로 풍부한 도시의 행정기록을 보존하고 있다. 이러한 기록은 책이나 대장(臺帳)의 형태를 하고 있으며, 그 안에는 재판, 세금수취 또는 도시행정부의 결정과 같은 일상의 행정들이 기록되어 있다. 문서고가 등장하던 시기에 행정 기록들이 지속적으로 생산되었다는 사실은 기록대장의 누적과 문서고 조직의 형성 사이에 상호관계가 존재했음을 의미한다. 본 논문에서는 이탈리아 도시에서의 행정기록의 기원과 문서고의 형성을 먼저 살펴본다. 그리고 루카와 볼로냐 문서고의 중세 문서 인벤토리와 그의 보존 및 관리를 위한 비망록을 중심으로 중세의 기록들이 어떻게 활용되었고, 어떻게 상실되었는지, 그리고 문서기록의 보호를 위해 어떠한 활동이 수반되었는지를 중점적으로 검토한다. 이러한 검토를 통해 중세의 도시민들과 도시의 행정관들이 이들 문서에 대해 어떻게 인식했으며 어떠한 태도를 보여주었는지를 확인할 수 있다.
