Hagiographies reflect the social circumstances of the time, and especially the cults being practiced in the local community. In this paper, I will first examine the lives of St AEthelthryth and Margery Kempe, as documented in the Book of Margery Kempe. St. AEthelthryth and Margery Kempe are both famous women from medieval England, and they are quite contrasting women. I will then compare the life of St. AEthelthryth and the Book of Margery Kempe, to illustrate the changing image of female saints from the Anglo-Saxon Age to the late Medieval Age. Image of women saints changes. Images of St. AEthelthryth and Margery look different, but both images reveal similar problems, and both images give us clues to help us understand women’s social and religious circumstances in those days.

성인전과 특히 지역사회에서 추앙되는 숭배는 당시대의 사회적 상황을 반영한다. 본고에서는 먼저 마저리 켐프의 책에 기록된 성녀 에셀드레다와 마저리 켐프의 생애를 살펴보고자 한다. 중세 영국의 유명한 여성들인 성녀 에셀드레다와 마저리 켐프는 상당히 대조적인 인물이다. 이어서 성녀 에셀드레다의 생애와 마저리 켐프의 책을 비교함으로써 앵글로 색슨 시대에서부터 중세 말기까지 성녀들의 이미지가 어떻게 변화하고 있는지를 설명하고자 한다. 성녀들의 이미지는 변하고 있다. 성녀 에셀드레다와 마저리 켐프의 이미지는 사뭇 달라 보이지만 유사한 문제점을 드러내고 있다. 그녀들의 이미지는 당시대 여성들의 사회적·종교적 상황을 이해할 수 있는 실마리를 제공하고 있다.
