W. B. Yeats showed an archetype of wisdom of the middle way in Sophocle’s Oedipus the King. His middle way is quite similar to that explained in Zisi’s Chungyung and Aristotle’s Nicomacheoan Ethics. Yeats explained in the cycle of Gyres that the subjective cone and the objective cone are entwined with each other and circulate through the phases of the moon, completing the middle way. Zisi explained that Chung is in harmony with Yung and they complete the middle way. Aristotle explained that when the two extremes meet in the middle, it is the state of the middle way. Oedipus and Jocasta do not live their lives with wisdom of the middle way: they ruin themselves, losing the middle way, and are destroyed. In this work, the middle way represents wisdom.

예이츠는 『오이디푸스 왕』에서 중용지혜의 원형을 제시했다. 이러한 그의 중용사상은 자사의 『중용』과 아리스토텔레스의 『니코마코스 윤리학』에 설명된 중용사상과 유사성이 있었다. 그는 주관적 원추와 객관적 원추가 달의 상들에서 순환하면서 중용을 완성하는 것을 가이어의 순환으로 설명하였다. 자사는 중과 용이 상호 조화를 이루면서 중용을 성취하였고, 아리스토텔레스는 양극단의 중간지점을 중용의 상태로 설명하였다. 이 중용사상은 오이디푸스 왕과 이오카스테의 삶에 그 보편적인 전형이 재현되었다. 그들은 자신들의 삶에 중용지혜를 접목시키지 못하고 그것을 상실하는 딜레마에 빠져서 결국 비극적 파멸을 맞이했다. 이 결과는 현대인들에게 중용이 얼마나 귀중한 지혜인가를 자각하도록 만든다.
