This research investigated the tale related to Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva in Japanese part of Geumseok story collection(konjaku monogatarisyu) based on type of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva and good deeds. Above all, good deeds of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva can be largely divided into the profit related to afterlife･afterworld, profit related to this world, and miracle of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva itself. Firstly, in respect of afterlife, concrete contents are ‘wish for rebirth in pure land’, ‘achievement of rebirth in pure land’, and ‘Sosaengdam’, etc. During that time, people seemed to have received Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva belief itself as the undifferentiated whole rather than the role in Yukdo respectively as YukAvalokitesvara Bodhisattva. Next, this research investigated Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva tale related to the profit of this world, mostly of ‘way to fortune and relief from poverty’, and in order of ‘relief from struggle(難)’ and ‘disease healing’. accordingly, it was determined that the people of that period prayed Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva for solution for the most realistic matter, economic problem. ‘Miracle of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva itself’ appeared representatively in Yeong-yidam of Buddhist statue and stand-in Yeongheomdam. Kinds of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva appeared in order of SeongAvalokitesvara Bodhisattva　and SibilmyeonAvalokitesvara Bodhisattva which flew in Japan in early period, then CheonsuAvalokitesvara Bodhisattva. Also, it was determined that MaduAvalokitesvara Bodhisattva, which had grotesque look and was evaded, including YeouiryunAvalokitesvara Bodhisattva, introduced to Japan the latest, JunjiAvalokitesvara Bodhisattva, respectively enshrined in Cheontae and Jineon, and BulgonggyeonsaekAvalokitesvara Bodhisattva did not attain the position of popular belief.

본고는 『금석이야기집』일본부에 나타난 관음관련 설화를 관음의 종류와 공덕을 중심으로 고찰한 것이다. 우선 관음의 공덕은 내세･후세와 관련된 이익과 현세에 관련된 이익, 그리고 ‘관음 스스로의 영험’으로 크게 나뉜다. 먼저 내세에 관한 것인데 구체적인 내용으로는 ‘정토왕생의 기원’ ‘정토 왕생성취’ ‘소생담’ 등이 있다. 당시의 중생들은 육관음의 각각의 육도에서의 역할보다는 미분화된 전체로서의 관음신앙 그 자체를 받아들였던 것으로 판단된다. 다음으로는 현세이익과 관련된 관음설화에 대해서인데, ‘치부(致富)와 빈곤의 구제’의 경우가 가장 많고 ‘난(難)으로부터의 구제’ ‘치병(治病)’이 그 뒤를 잇는다. 당시의 중생들은 가장 현실적인 경제적 문제의 해소를 관음에게 기원하였다는 사실을 잘 알 수 있다. ‘관음 스스로의 영험’은 불상의 영이담과 대역(代役) 영험담이 대표적이다. 관음의 종류로는 이른 시기에 일본에 유입된 성관음, 십일면관음이 첫 번째, 두 번째이고 이어서 천수관음 순이다. 가장 늦게 일본에 전파된 여의륜관음을 포함하여, 형상이 괴기하여 기피된 마두관음이나 천태와 진언에서 따로따로 숭상된 준지관음, 불공견색관음은 대중성이 있는 신앙의 지위를 획득하지 못하였음을 확인할 수 있었다.

本稿は『今昔物語集』に見る観音関連説話を観音の種類と功徳を中心に考察したものである。まず観音の功徳は、来世･後世と関わる利益と現世に関わる利益、そして‘観音自らの霊験’で大きく分けられる。 まず、来世と関わる説話であるが、具体的な内容として、‘浄土往生の祈請’、‘浄土往生の成就’‘蘇生談’などが挙げられる。当時の衆生は、六観音のそれぞれの六道での役目よりは微分化された全体としての観音信仰そのものを受け入れたことと判断される。次は現世利益と関わる内容は、‘致富と貧困の救済’の場合が一番多く、‘難からの救済’‘治病’がその後に続く。当時の衆生は、一番現実的な経済的問題の解消を観音に祈ったという事実をよく分かる。‘観音自らの霊験’は、仏像の霊異談と身代わりの霊験談が代表的である。観音の種類はというと、早い時期に日本に将来された聖観音、十日面観音が一番目、二番目で、次は千手観音の順となっている。もっとも遅く日本へ将来された如意輪觀音を始め、形狀の奇怪さで忌避された馬頭観音や天台とし真言で別々に崇尚された准胝觀音や不空羂索觀音は大衆的な信仰の地位を獲得することができなかったことを確認できた。
