This paper aims to analyze the narrative strategies and desire of the novel of Elegant Lies. The Tex uses the narrative strategy of first person viewpoint and multiple viewpoints, and handles in detail the problem of the suicidal impulse of a girl who is alienated from school and relationship with other people and the issue of death. The first characteristic is when the author intentionally uses first person point of view, the process that the character eventually chooses suicide due to extreme anxiety and pain stemming from alienation is depicted through the episodes of symbols and metaphors, and memories, and the change in the flow of consciousness is emphasized. The motive, dangerous relationship, and desire about Cheonji’s suicide are revealed one by one through her inner monologue, during which the use of first person(I) and the predicate, ‘~supnida’, gradually shows that the flow of consciousness of the character(inner monologue) is closely related to the resulting behavior(suicide). The second characteristic is that while the investigating process of Manji takes the central role of the narrative, the author adopts multiple viewpoints for unfolding the narrative in order to gain a 3-dimensional view on Cheonji’s suicide. ‘The five skeins of thread’ and a memo that Cheonji left behind serve as a medium to track the reason of Cheonji’s death and the meaning of her death. As the work presents the situation of each character from various angles through multiple viewpoints, it does not talk about who is ethically responsible about the death but leads the readers to ask themselves. As was reviewed above, Elegant Lies adopts first person free direct narrative and firmly grasp the flow of main character’s psychology. Also in the plot that unfolds in the third person point of view, the narrative is made in a way that readers can feel the pain of Hwayeon and a third person so it shows the world of weak people who struggle to maintain their life.

본고는 『우아한 거짓말』에 나타난 서술전략과 인물들의 욕망을 고찰하는데 목적이 있다. 『우아한 거짓말』은 1인칭 시점과 다중시점의 서사 전략을적극 활용하여 학교와 인간관계에서 소외된 소녀의 자살충동과 죽음의 문제를 밀도 있게 다룬다. 서사 진행 과정에서 작가는 시점이 단순히 서사를이끌어가는 기능뿐 아니라 인간관계와 욕망을 어떻게 담아내는지를 두 가지 특징으로 보여준다. 첫 번째, 작가가 의도적으로 1인칭 시점을 활용할 때는 등장인물이 소외로인한 극도의 불안과 고통으로 결국 자살을 선택하는 과정을 상징과 은유의에피소드, 기억을 통해 의식의 흐름의 변화를 강조한다. 천지의 자살에 대한 동기나 위험한 관계, 욕망이 내적독백을 통해 차근차근 드러나는데, 이때는 1 인칭 “나는”과 “~습니다”의 서술어를 사용하면서 인물의 의식의 흐름이 결과적 행위인 자살과 밀접한 결합을 갖고 있음을 확장하면서 보여준다. 두 번째, 만지의 탐문 과정이 서사의 중심을 형성하는데 작가는 천지의자살과 인물들의 욕망에 대해 입체적으로 시야를 확보하기 위해 다중 시점서술방식을 동원해 서사를 진행한다. 천지가 남긴 ‘다섯 개의 실타래’와 쪽지는 천지가 왜 죽었는지, 그 죽음이 무엇을 의미하는지에 대해 추적하는매개가 된다. 이 작품은 다중 시점을 통해 각 인물의 상황을 다각도로 제시하기 때문에 죽음에 대한 윤리적 책임은 누구에게 있는가에 대해 직접 말하지 않고, 독자 스스로 질문하도록 유도한다. 이와 같이 『우아한 거짓말』에서는 1인칭 자유직접 화법에 의해 주인공의심리흐름을 면밀히 포착하고 있다. 또한 3인칭으로 전개되는 플롯에서는 화연이나 제3자의 아픔도 함께 공감하도록 서사를 형상화함으로써 삶을 지속하기 위해 고투하는 나약한 인물들의 세계를 보여준다. 이처럼 『우아한 거짓말』은 서술전략에 따라 인물의 표현에 대한 욕망과 관계회복에 대한 욕망을 효과적으로 보여준다는 점에서 문학적 성취를 보여준다.
