Oh, Jeonghee’s 「Chinatown」is dealing with the event that ‘I’ have experienced in ‘chinatown’ from second grade in elementary school to sixth grade. We can grasp the full significance of this works when the stages of development in ‘I’ is related to the meaning of space shown in this work. In this work, ‘chinatown’ is differentiated from ‘port city’. ‘Port city’ is set to the space dominated by the discourse such as the violent military culture represented as the US armed forces, and the distorted capitalist economy, and the ideology of anti-communist and everything. In contrast, ‘chinatown’ is set to the space free of domination discourse like a lonely ‘island’. Against this backdrop, ‘I’ am growing up physically and shows drastic change mentally. At first, ‘I’ am habituated to domination discourse. Gradually, ‘I’ refuse to be habituated to domination discourse. Ultimately, ‘I’ set up the world represented as ‘chinatown’ as the directing point of growth. The growth process in ‘I’ for four years can be divided into next two steps. The first step deal with the content that ‘I’ is habituated to domination discourse such as the violence of the US armed forces, the distorted economy, the ideology of anti-communist, and refuse to be habituated to domination discourse. The second step deal with the content that ‘I’ experience the animal life of female pressed on domination discourse such as the patriarchy ideology and the male chauvinism, and refuse to such a life, and want to establish the true identity of female through the world represented as ‘chinatown’. As a result, the menarche in ‘I’ acquire the significance that it is the first step toward establishing the true identity of female.

오정희의 「중국인 거리」(1979)는 유년의 ‘나’가 아홉 살 되던 2학년 봄에피난지에서 항구 도시로 이사 와 6학년 봄까지 중국인 거리를 중심으로 해서 겪게 되는 사건을 다루고 있다. 이 작품은 공간이 갖는 의미와 ‘나’의 성장 단계를 관련지어 바라보아야 그 진정한 의미망을 파악할 수 있다. 이 작품에서 ‘중국인 거리’는 ‘항구 도시’와 뚜렷한 차이점을 지닌 공간으로 설정되어 있다. 먼저, ‘항구도시’는 미군으로 표상되는 폭력적인 군사문화, 타락하고 왜곡된 자본주의 경제, 반공 이데올로기 등과 같은 담론이지배하고 있는 공간으로 설정되어 있다. 반면 ‘중국인 거리’는 외로운 ‘섬’ 과 같이 ‘시가지’의 지배담론과는 동떨어진 공간으로 설정되어 있다. 이러한 배경 하에 ‘나’는 육체적으로 성장하면서 내면적으로도 급격한 변화를 겪는다. 그러한 내면의 성장과 변화는 ‘시가지’의 지배담론에 길들여지다가 그것을 거부하거나 일탈하는 쪽으로 나아가면서 결국에는 ‘중국인거리’로 표상되는 세계를 성장의 지향점으로 설정하는 것으로 귀결된다. ‘나’의 4년 동안의 성장 과정은 크게 두 단계로 나눌 수 있다. 첫 번째 단계([A]~[D]단계)는 미군의 폭력성, 왜곡된 경제, 반공 이데올로기 같은 지배담론에 길들여지면서도 또한 그것을 거부하는 내용을 주로 다루고 있다. 두번째 단계([E]~[F]단계)는 가부장제 이데올로기, 남성우월주의 같은 지배담론이 여성의 삶을 여러 겹으로 억압하고 착취하는 것을 경험하면서 그러한 지배담론에 희생되는 여성의 삶을 거부하고, 중국인 거리로 표상되는 세계를통해 여성의 진정한 정체성 찾기로 나아가는 과정을 다루고 있다. 이를 통해, 이 작품 결말에 제시된 ‘나’의 ‘초조’는 여성의 진정한 정체성찾기를 위한 첫걸음이라는 의미를 확보하게 된다. 이 첫걸음은 오정희 소설의 전체적인 전개과정에서 가부장제 하에서 억압받고 희생당하는 여성이그 억압으로부터 벗어나기 위한 격렬한 몸부림으로 심화된다.
