The purpose of this paper is to compare the water imagery expressed in the poems of Kim Jongsam, the modernist and Park Jaesam, the traditional lyric poet in 1950∼60’s Korean post war poems. The water imagery in the poems of Kim Jongsam used for expressing the fantasy of death and celestial world. He evacuated from the real world full of frustration and alienation. He wanted to obtain dreams and visions which could be achieved only by intoxicated condition. He also seek for the image of ‘sacred water’ in his poems for being rescued from the painful reality. Park Jaesam used the water imagery for purifying the sorrow and bitter feeling in his poems. He had the circulating view of the world that the death and resurrection is combined. By analysing water imagery, we can confirm that his poems have psychological substratum of traditional society which has the thought of transmigration of soul and resuscitation. Sometimes his poems had oversentimental expression by using poetic diction ‘tears’ too much. The water imagery expressed in the poems of Kim Jongsam is related to something non existing in real world, on the other hand, that expressed in the poems of Park Jaesam is related to real world itself. The former expressed consciousness of alienation, the latter the grounds ofreal life. The former fragmental, the latter structural. The former characteristic, the latter conventional. These points of difference is significance because they represent the poetic technique of modernism and traditional lyric poems in 1950∼60’s Korean post war poems.

1950~1960년대 모더니즘 시인 김종삼과 전통 서정시인 박재삼 시에 나타난 물 이미지를 비교하여 전후 한국시의 유형과 특성을 파악하려는 것이이 글의 목적이다. 김종삼 시에 나타난 물 이미지는 죽음에 대한 환상과 이를 이상향적・천상적 세계로 승화하는 데 사용되었다. 김종삼 시의 물 이미지는 소외와 좌절의 현실에 대한 도피처를 알코올 의존성에 의한 몽환의 세계에서 찾는 수단이기도 하였다. 아울러 김종삼은 비관적 현실의 고통에서 구원 받는 수단으로 ‘성스러운 물’의 이미지를 갈구하였다. 박재삼 시에서는 물 이미지가 서러움의 정서와 한(恨)의 정화라는 심리적카타르시스를 위한 수단으로 사용되었다. 박재삼은 죽음과 재생이 연결된다는 순환적 세계관을 지녔다. 박재삼 시의 바다 이미지에서 윤회와 환생의전통공동체의 심리적 저층을 확인할 수 있다. 그러나 박재삼 시는 눈물을너무 많이 드러냄으로써 센티멘털리즘의 과잉에 빠지기도 하였다. 김종삼과 박재삼 시의 물 이미지를 비교한 결과 다음과 같은 차이점을 발견할 수 있었다. 김종삼 시가 비실재적이고 천상적 세계를 지향한다면, 박재삼 시는 현실감정 자체에 몰입되어 있다는 점, 김종삼 시의 물 이미지가 보조적・단편적・장식적이라면 박재삼 시의 경우는 근원적・통일적・구조적이라는 점, 김종삼 시의 물 이미지가 물가・눈송이 등 소외의식과 변두리 의식에 연관된 것이 많음에 반하여 박재삼 시의 물 이미지는 강・바다 등 생활의 터전이 되는 것들이 많다는 점, 김종삼 시의 물 이미지가 개성적 창조물이라면, 박재삼 시의 물 이미지는 관습적 재현이라는 점 등이다. 이는 시에서 이미지를 중시하고 절제된 언어에 의한 조형적 구조물을 만들고자 하는 모더니즘의 시적 기법과, 노래의 기능을 중시하고 시적 자아의감정고백을 드러내고자 하는 전통서정시의 시적 기법에 의한 차이점에 기인한 것으로 생각된다.
