This paper examines the point of convergence of conversion and confusion in Jeong Ji-yong’s religious poems in terms of religious conversion and psychological conflicts of poetic subject. I made an attempt to specify the scope of Jeong’s religious poems which has not been clearly defined and to find a new meaning of his undervalued poems which have been criticized for a lack of existential reflection on human nature and for not going beyond superficial ideas. And then I suggested as a way of reading for religious poems the attitudes and religious experiences of a human being faced with the absolute other, God. Lastly, in the analysis of “Window 2,” I provided a possibility to reevaluate it as a poem on Jeong’s conversion. To sum up, for Jeong, faith was a psychological means he chose in the process of healing his inner imperfections and integrating his divided self. Undergoing religious conversion, Jeong attempted to integrate his fragmented self that existed between life and death, faith and reality. However, sometimes the process was integrative and at their times revealed fragmentation and isolation which he failed to sublimate into integration. His struggles as a religious subject with conflicts between faith and existence were his most intense reflection on human nature and the vestiges of his struggles are deeply ingrained in his religious poems. Therefore, if the contribution of Jeong’s religious poems is valuable in the history of Korean modern poems, then, we need to do justice to the process of his struggles.

그동안 선행된 정지용의 종교시에 대한 연구는 문학적 성취라는 잣대로종교시의 성패를 가늠했을 뿐, 정지용이라는 한 존재에게 종교적인 경험이왜 중요했으며, 그가 써낸 종교시들은 정지용에게 어떤 의미를 갖는가에 대한 질문은 외면하고 있었다. 이에 본고는 그간 명료하지 않았던 정지용의종교시의 범위를 구체화하고, 산수시로 이행하는 과정에서 드러난 특징으로만 저평가된 종교시의 의미를 새롭게 추적하였다. 특히, 정지용의 종교시편은 그가 가톨릭으로 개종한 이후 가장 집중적으로 써냈던 시기를 중심으로 살펴보는 것이 타당하다고 보고, 정지용의 가톨릭 입교와 맞물린 1920 년대 후반의 시들부터 종교시편이 가장 집중적으로 창작된 1930년대의 시들, 그리고 1941년 두 번째 시집인 『백록담』 출간 이전까지로 그 범위를 확장할 수 있다고 보았다. 나아가 정지용의 기독교시를 보다 넓은 범주의 ‘종교시편’으로 정의하고, 신이라는 대타자와 마주한 인간 주체의 인격(태도)과종교적 경험을 살피는 것을 종교시를 읽는 독법으로 제시했다. 이를 통해정지용이라는 한 인간이 회의하고 투쟁했던 흔적까지 존중하면서 정지용의종교시편에 나타난 회심과 균열의 지점을 고찰하였다. 그 과정에서 「유리창2」를 정지용의 회심시로 재평가할 수 있는 가능성을 제시했으며, 그의 종교시편에는 정지용이라는 종교적 주체가 성(聖)과 속(俗) 사이에서 균열과 격절을 감내해냈던 인간적인 고투와 신에 대한 진지한 질문이 자리하고 있음을 확인했다. 요컨대 정지용에게 종교는 국권 상실이라는 식민지 현실과 자식의 죽음이라는 개인적 상실감을 극복하는 과정에서 마주한 정신적 삶의 돌파구였다. 정지용은 출구 없는 세상 속에서 『가톨릭 청년』의 편집에 깊이 참여하는한편, 시시각각 다가오는 일본 제국주의의 위협 속에서 가톨릭 신앙을 통해분열된 자신의 정체성을 통합하고자 했다. 가톨릭 신앙을 받아들인 후 정지용은 회심을 경험하며 삶과 죽음, 신앙과 현실 사이에 존재하는 분리된 자아를 통합하려 했으나, 그 과정은 통합적으로 드러날 때도 있었고 균열을드러낼 때도 있었다. 정지용과 가톨릭 신앙과의 만남 사이에는 이처럼 정신주의적 현실 대응의 논리가 자리하고 있었으며, 이 같은 태도는 이후 산수시로의 방향 전환으로 이어졌다.
