The purpose of this study is to clarify the mechanism of the verb properties (dynamic) of Japanese compound nouns “V+N(verb conjunctive form + noun; VN)”. Japanese “V+N” type compound nouns show difference in the dynamic properties even in the same configuration. In this study, focusing on this difference, we examine “semantic and grammatical relationships(Kageyama 1993)” within the Japanese “V+N” type compound nouns. As a result, Japanese “V+N” type compound nouns can have dynamic properties because it has both the modification relationship and themantic relationship. On the other hand, “V+N” type compound nouns expressing the modification relationship only, do not have dynamic properties. However, not all Japanese “V+N” type compound nouns expressing the themantic relationship have dynamic properties. Additionally, compound nouns can have the dynamic properties on condition that it should keep the original verb-noun relationship. In case the compound noun’s original meaning shifts through specialization, it cannot keep the dynamic properties as shown in the case of the word “kimono”, which does not keep the meaning of something to wear. Moreover, it is found that there are “V+N” type compound nouns in Japanese with the intermediate properties of “+dynamic” and “-dynamic”. Our future research subject will cover identifying these semi-dynamic compound nouns so as to clarify the mechanism of dynamic of “V+N” type compound nouns.
