In this study, the uses of hedge with respect to the relationship between interlocutors in conversations with first-meeting persons or friends, are investigated. The results are summarized as follows. Irrespective of the relationship between interlocutors, the overall use ratio of hedge in Japanese is higher than that in Korean. For both Korean and Japanese, the use ratio of hedge is higher when they are talking with elder interlocutor, and this tendency is stronger in Korean conversations and much stronger in conversations between Korean male interlocutors. For both Koran and Japanese, the use ratio of hedge is higher in conversations between first-meeting persons than that between friends. The influence of gender on the use of hedge is more significant in Japanese than that in Korea. For the coincidence of hedge and speech level, its ratio is higher at low politeness forms (sentence-final speech level) in both languages, which implies that hedge can be used strategically in conversations.
