“Underground 2: the place that was promised” is Haruki Murakami’s secondnonfiction work. This literary piece has been recognized a sequel to “Underground”that was set in the subway sarin terror case which committed by a religious groupnamed Aum Shinrikyo on March 20th 1995. But why Haruki Murakami had determined to write this work facing criticismfrom the people. Speaking from the conclusion, he tried to reveal the facts thatone-sided report and dichotomous thinking of victim and assailant were wrong andevery human essentially has a devil inside. He wanted to shed light on theheterogeneity and homogeneity. Since “The Wind-Up Bird chronicle”, he has been talking of violence. Accordingto his comment, intense violence such as “subway sarin terror” is erupted as a formof nightmare inside of our minds and the case revealed the contradiction andweakness in our social system with such fearful accuracy. Further, in the view of deficiency in the main characters of Haruki works, everyhuman is existence of lacking and religion is one of the methods to fill the lackinside. In fact, the author Haruki Murakami himself fulfilled the social and civil mindthat has been lacking in his mind by doing interviews between 1995 and 1998. Heproduced nutrients that mean his work from the soil formed inside of him. Further,there is no need to say that the experiences became an organism that is operatedby personal story in depth and social story in wide mutually. It is a meaningfulverification of his writer consciousness as he realized the list he drew up in theUnited States, “things I want to do in Japan” in detail.
