In that religion is the system of most fundamental belief and interpretation of the world and life, it is the unity as a whole encompassing philosophy, thoughts and culture. But all religions exist not as the abstract ‘religion in general,’ but as an individual which is concrete substance existent unified with particular thoughts, particular region and particular culture. The reflection of the character and reality of religion united in specific human existential circumstances is therefore necessary for those who seek to find out philosophy and thoughts in a particular religion. Under the questioning like this, the present article aims to analyze and criticize the actuality of Christianity in North America and South Korea from various perspectives, on the one hand to anatomize the problems of Christianity which recently became a target of more harsh criticism than ever and on the other hand to ascertain what the essence of the church visibly representing the Christianity as religion could be, in order to understand what the Christianity as religion is and should be.

세계와 삶에 대한 가장 근원적이고 총체적인 해석의 체계 이자 신념의 체계라는 점에서, 종교는 철학과 사상, 문화를 아우르는 인간 정신의 총화다. 그러나 모든 종교는 추상적인 ‘종교 일반’으로서 가 아니라 특정 사상, 특정 지역 및 문화와 결합되어 존립하는 구체적 실체인 ‘개별 종교’로서만 존재한다. 인간적 삶의 구체적인 실존적 상 황과 결합된 종교의 성격과 현실에 대한 고찰은, 그 종교 안에 담긴 철학과 사상의 본령을 확인하려는 이들에게 그래서 불가피한 작업이 다. 이러한 문제의식 아래 이 논문은 북미와 한국의 기독교 현실을 다 양한 관점에서 분석 비판함으로써, 한편으로 근래 들어 유독 비판의 표적이 되고 있는 기독교의 문제 상황을 해부하는 동시에 종교로서의 기독교를 가시적으로 재현하는 교회의 본질이 무엇인가를 확인함으로 써 기독교 신앙의 본령이 무엇인가를 더 깊이 이해하는 데 그 목적이 있다.
