As capitalism has ushered in economic development and advanced growth to humanity, corporations have had significant influence on society. In this regard, as our society grows higher expectation towards corporations, corporate social responsibility has been accentuated. Today, discussion and implementation of CSR have become a necessity rather than a choice. CSR is no longer regarded as a moral and ethical responsibility but it should be recognized as legal liability that must be fully reflected on a corporation’s management policy. Devoted CSR departments have been established in large corporations in Korea in order to reflect and implement their CSR policies. Nonetheless, socially responsible activities conducted by Korean corporations are more prone to promote company images, out of formality. In order to actualize corporate social responsibility activities, the corporate disclosure system should be reinforced, such as that in Germany, for stakeholders including shareholders, employees, consumers and community members to acquire accurate information about a corporation. Up until now, Korean corporations have been only focused on conventional financial information for increased profits. Nevertheless, as shown in cases of legislation in other countries, social and environmental responsibilities have become emphasized for sustainable growth and development of a corporation, and relevant information regarding this matter has been considered to be critical. Accordingly, non-financial information should be included in the corporate disclosure. Furthermore, ISO 26000, the global guidance standard on social responsibility, may have a significant impact on Korean corporations, thus, systematic preparation and responses are required. In order to properly implement CSR throughout our society, objective assessment should be initially conducted to corporations themselves. Then, corporations must build trust with their stakeholders through communication. In addition, corporations should carry out ongoing monitoring of their social responsibility while establishing improvement measures in the event that they identify any problems in the process.

우리나라의 대기업들은 기업의 사회적 책임(Corporate Social Responsibility: 이하 CSR로 약함)을 정책에 반영하고 이행하기 위해서 CSR부서를 설치하고 있다. 그러나 아직 우리 기업들의 사회적 책임 활동은 기업의 이미지 제고를 위한 형식적인 면이 강하다. 기업의 사회적 책임 활동의 실질화를 위해서는 독일의 경우처럼 주주이외에도 근로자, 소비자 및 지역주민 등의 이해관계자들이 기업에 대한 정확한 정보를 얻을 수 있도록 기업 공시제도가 강화되어야 한다. 종래에 우리기업은 이익증대를 위한 재무적 정보만 중시하였으나, 이제는 외국의 입법례에서 나타난 바와 같이 기업의 지속적인 성장 발전을 위해서 사회적, 환경적 책임이 강조되고 있으며 이와 관련된 정보도 중요하게 여겨지고 있다. 따라서 기업공시에는 비재무정보도 포함되어야 한다. 그리고 ISO 26000과 같은 사회적 책임 국제표준이 우리나라 기업에 큰 영향을 미칠 수 있기 때문에 이에 대한 체계적인 준비와 대응이 필요하다. CSR이 우리 사회에서 제대로 구현되기 위해서는 먼저 기업 자체에 대한 객관적인 평가가 이루어져야 한다. 그리고 기업이 이해관계자들과의 소통을 통하여 신뢰를 쌓아야 한다. 또한 기업의 사회적 책임활동에 대한 계속적인 모니터링을 실시하며 그 과정에서 문제점을 발견하게 되면 그에 대한 개선 방안을 수립하여야 한다.
