The purpose of this study is to discuss on how effectively college English programs can provide the demander-oriented education to the students. H University has been offering customized English courses since the second semester in 2015 for students majoring in Physics and Art. These courses focus on four parts; providing TOEIC program depending on students’ needs, major-related English learning programs for 2 weeks, customized evaluation, and finally learning specific chapters in the text book which are related to students’ major or easier ones. As the result of the survey conducted at the end of the second semester in 2015 by the department, it was found out that most students were satisfied with this program in light of offering contents related to their interests. Most professors were also pleased with it in that students are likely to participate in the class much more actively with better concentration. However, the counterplan for the opinion of minority in taking TOEIC lectures should be considered. In addition, professors’ overwork to prepare for classes was also mentioned as the problem to be solved.

본 연구의 목적은 충남에 소재한 H대학의 교양영어 예체능계열의 맞춤식 분리 운영의 사례를 통한 수요자 중심의 교양영어 운영 방안의 효과 및 개선점을 논의함에 있다. 행정상의 이유로 수준별 수업이 아닌, 전공별 분반 방식의 전체 공동 수업으로 교양영어를 진행하는 H대학은 2015학년도 2학기부터 타계열에 비해 영어 학습에 있어서의 특수성이 더 뚜렷한 예체능계열 학생들의 수준과 관심 분야에 맞는 맞춤식 수업을 제공해왔다. 강독과 토익수업을 병행하는 교양영어의 예체능계열의 분리 운영은 크게 ‘수요에 따른 토익 수업의 제공’, ‘전공영어 프로그램 2주차 실시’, ‘맞춤식 평가항목 및 점수 구성’, 그리고 ‘공동교재의 개별 챕터 선정’의 네 가지 부분을 중심으로 진행하였다. 한 학기 운영 후인 2015년도 2학기 말에, 모든 예체능계열 학생들을 대상으로 한 만족도 조사와 교강사들을 대상으로 한 개방형 설문을 시행하였다. 학생들은 본인들의 필요에 따른 수업의 제공과 전공과 관련된 관심 분야의 내용을 제공한 면에서 높은 만족도를 나타내었고, 교수자들은 학생들의 수업 참여에의 적극성, 높은 몰입도, 강의의 수월함 등의 긍정적인 운영 효과가 있었다고 답했다. 반면에, 토익 수업을 제공하지 않기로 결정된 분반에서 토익 수업을 원하는 소수의 학생들을 위한 대책 마련, 관련 단어표현들과 소재를 다룬 독립적인 교재의 개발, 그리고 수업 준비를 위한 교강사의 업무과다 등의 문제점이 개선해야 될 부분으로 지목되었다.
