This article is the study on the otherization strategy of WASP establishment and its dominating ideology within the social context of rapid surging of immigrants, which is shown through the American Renaissance murals. Having been faced into the consciousness of social crisis along with the increase of immigrants in 1880s, WASP establishment restricted immigrant's cultural expansion topographically, racially and religiously to protect their own culture. The American Renaissance murals produced during that times connotes WASP establishment's ruling ideology and spirit, which WASP tried to reinforce through such murals. American Renaissance murals reflecting a change into the Multiculturalism exhibited two separate strategies of the WASP establishment: to concrete WASP's public area by separating immigrants from its area and to absorb immigrants into WASP's area by assimilating them.

본 논문은 아메리칸 르네상스 벽화에 드러나는 와스프 계층의 타자화 전략과 그들의 지배 이데올로기를 이민의 급증이라는 사회적 문맥 내에서 고찰한 연구이다. 1880년대 이민의 급증으로사회적 위기의식을 느낀 와스프 계층은 와스프 문화를 지키는 과정에서 그들 문화의 범주를 지형학적으로, 인종적으로, 종교적으로 제한했다. 이 시기 아메리칸 르네상스 벽화들은 와스프 지배층의 지배 이념과 이상을 포함하고 있으며, 와스프 계층은 이 벽화들을 통해 지배 이데올로기를 강화하려 했다. 다문화주의로 변화하는 시기 아메리칸 르네상스 벽화들은 와스프 계층의 상반된 두 가지 전략을 보여주었다. 한편으로는 이주민들을 자신들의 영역에서 분리해서 자신들만의 공적 영역을 강화시키는 방식과 또 다른 한편으로는 회유와, 설득을 통해 자신들의 영역으로 편입시키는방식을 보여주었다.
