This study has objectives as follows. First, to formulate the new formative language and define the concept of informality which generates a diverse, dynamic space and non-geometric forms; second, to find its characteristics and values through analyses on informality by type; and lastly, to conceptualize informal design and establish the system of informal designs and forms, thus to provide the foundation of researches on information systems to be used as an efficient design tool. For the study, a theoretical research via studies of literature and an empirical research via analyses of cases were simultaneously conducted. The study first examines informality of art, architecture and industrial design and defines the concept and characteristics; and based on the concept of informality, this study finds the type and characteristics of informal design expressed in modern fashion. The concept of informality is opposite of formality referred by geometric rules, proportion and symmetry, as it produces a dramatic and free ambiance. Informality is being materialized as a new approach in modern design. In modern fashion, informality breaks down the fundamental concept and formative arts of clothing, there is no fixture, and in details new images inspire a new emotion as they are freely and diversely expressed through movements and the wearer. As a result of analyzing informality by type, it is characterized by asymmetry, non-predictability, distortion and playfulness. Its results are unpredictable productions through the introduction of different modes of wearing and foreign materials. Design-wise, while it is expressed through transformation, exaggeration and distortion, partial or whole, informal design created by connecting informal objects generates aesthetic playfulness as it materializes what’s deemed impossible in reality and results in new images.

본 연구는 현대 패션디자인에 새로운 디자인 표현 도구로 나타난 비정형에 관한 논문이다. 연구의 목적은 첫째, 디자인에 새로운 형태 언어를 생성시키고 과거와는 다른 다양하고 역동적인 공간, 비기하학적인 다양한 형태를 창출하고 있는 비정형의 개념을 정의하고, 둘째, 비정형에 관한 유형별 특성 분석을 통해 디자인 표현 도구로서의 그 특징과 가치를 규명하고자 한다. 마지막으로 비정형 디자인을 개념화하고 유형별 특성을 분석함으로써 비정형 디자인의 활용과 비정형 형태의 체계를 구축하고 효율적인 디자인 도구의 적용을 위한 정보체계 연구의 기초가 되는 데 그 목적이 있다. 본 연구는 문헌고찰을 통한 이론적 연구와 사례 분석을 통한 실증적 연구를 병행하였다. 패션디자인에서의 비정형의 개념을 정의하기에 앞서 조형예술, 건축 및 공간에서의 비정형을 살펴보고 그 개념과 특징을 정의하였으며, 연구의 분석으로 얻어진 비정형의 개념을 토대로 현대 패션에 표현된 비정형 디자인의 유형과 특성을 규명하였다. 이론적 배경과 사례를 토대로 얻어진 비정형의 개념은 기하학적 질서, 비례, 대칭 등 동질적 요소의 질서로 일컫는 정형에 대한 반대적 의미로서 일종의 자유 형태를 말하며, 부조화, 균형의 파괴로 고정관념에서 탈피되어 작가의 표현 방식에 따라 극적이며 자유로운 분위기를 연출한다. 비정형은 현대 디자인에서 새로운 접근 방식으로 실현되고 있다. 건축에서는 새로운 소재의 사용과 요소들 간에 자유로운 배치 방식으로 순수기하학적 구조에서 벗어나 유연한 공간구성을 보여주고 있으며 제품에서는 순수미술가에 가까운 디자인 프로세스로 자연적인 조형미를 이루고 있다. 현대 패션에서의 비정형은 형태에 있어서 의상이라는 기본 개념과 조형미를 허물고 있으며 소재에 있어서도 재료의 고정됨이 없이 사용되고 있으며 디테일에 있어서 새로운 이미지로 감성을 불러일으키는 역할을 하며 움직임과 착장자에 의해 다양하게 표현되고 있음이 발견되었다. 비정형은 유형별로 분석한 결과로 비대칭, 비예측, 왜곡성, 유희성이라는 특성이 있었으며 기본 구성 원리에서 벗어나 비대칭으로 정형적인 미에서 탈피함으로서 긴장감을 표현하고 착장방식과 이질적인 소재도입으로 비예측적인 결과를 연출하였다. 디자인에 있어서 부분적으로 또는 전체적으로 확대하거나 왜곡한 형태로 표현되거나 기존의 이미지를 새로운 이미지로 전환시켜 즐거움과 미적인 유희를 유발하는 결과를 가져왔다.
