The purpose of this article is to verify, from the viewpoint of the transfer theory, in Japan, how the technique of the early “American-style convenience store” is transferred, also whether the Japanese-style convenience store has been formed as to what the criteria. To be more specific, I will examine the mechanisms through which convenience store know-how is transferred in convenience store markets overseas, which elements of convenience store know-how are easy to apply, which are difficult to apply and why. In terms of the success or failure of the transfer of convenience store know-how to convenience store abroad, the transfer process differs according to whether it is possible to express the technique on paper in a manual or not (the x-axis), and the extent to which is it dependent upon the ‘three determinate factors’ which define it (the y-axis). The four subspaces, Partial Application(Standardization)(Ⅱ), Adaptation(Ⅰ), Partial Adaptation(Ⅲ) and Application(Standardization)(Ⅳ), are thereby created in a coplanar space. Here, the retailing know-how that is targeted for transfer differs depending on which of these most clearly reflects the minds of the management and the organisation after due consideration has been given to the values and needs of consumers at that particular time and in that consumer environment. Therefore, the formation and characteristics of Japanese-style convenience store can be proved from this framework.

本研究の目的は、コンビニエンスストアを研究対象とし、日本において、初期の｢アメリカ型コンビニエンスストア｣の技法がどのように移転され、日本型コンビニエンスストアが何を基準として形成されたのか(メカニズム)について、｢移転論｣の視座から検証することである。具体的には、日本において、アメリカ型コンビニエンスストアの技法がどの程度アメリカから日本に移転されたのか、またその技法がどの程度修正され現地に移転可能であったのか、あるいは移転不可能であったのか、不可能な場合それは何故であったのかについて理論検証を行う。つまり、日本における｢アメリカ型コンビニエンスストア｣の技法移転は、移転対象となる諸技法のマニュアル化･プログラム化(標準化)の可能性の度合いを横軸とし、それらを規定する文化構造や経済過程や企業内外の｢諸組織｣などの制度的環境条件の類似度を縦軸にとると、同平面空間において、｢適応(修正)｣(Adaptation)･｢部分的適応(修正)化｣(Partial Adaptation)ないしは｢適用(標準)｣(Application；Standardization)･｢部分的適用(標準)化｣(Partial Application；Partial Standardization)というプロセスが出来上がる。したがって、日本型コンビニエンスストアの形成と特徴はこの枠組みから証明できる。
