The parents of the twin children are likely to be burdened with the cost of rearing them and taking the toil of nurturing them more than the other parents who take care of their children. And the stresses they feel two times more due to the much burden of nurturing make them to expose their accumulated emotion to their children. In this difficult nurturing process, the parents don‘t listen to what the children say and become obstinate, which leads to the aggressive anger of the children. In this situation, when the parents respond to the children showing the fierce anger with the threatening violent instruction, the children show worsened antagonism. When this kind of vicious cycle persists,이 the children lose all the duties and the learning desires and become closed minded and even antisocial, and even become problematic ones. Moreover, we can‘t disregard the fact that their relational characteristics are formed by the nurturing methods of their parents in their childhood and this tendency continues for a lifetime. The characteristics of the relationship are determined by what kind of relationship they maintain with the parents in upbringing. This signifies that the systematic research suited to the psychological environment of the children ,not by the uniformed nurturing method applied to all the kids, is necessary. With this consideration in mind, this thesis focuses on the understanding of the twin children and the traits of the children influenced on the adaptation and development of the twin children ,and the nurturing attitude and psychological characteristics of the parents. And I suggest that the theories mainly depending on the object relation theory of Harry Stack Sullivan who pioneers the object relation can be an alterative to the methods used for nurturing the twin children.

쌍둥이 자녀의 부모는 일반 아동의 양육에 비해 더 많은 양육의 부양비와 양육 의 수고를 감당해야 하는 부담감이 높다. 그리고 쌍둥이 자녀의 부모는 일반자녀 의 양육보다 두 배나 더 많은 양육수고를 부담해야 하는 스트레스 때문에 자녀를 양육하면서 쌓인 자신의 부정적인 감정을 자녀에게 노출시키는 경우가 많다. 이들의 양육과정에서 부모가 쌍둥이 자녀 중 말을 듣지 않고 고집을 부리며, 분노를 유발하는 공격성이 드러나기 쉽다. 이런 경우에 분노가 강한 아동에게 부모가 똑같이 충동적으로 폭력적이고 위협적인 훈육으로 대응할 경우 아동의 성격을 악화시켜 부모에게 적대적이게 만든다. 이 악순환이 계속되면 이런 아동은 청소년기에 이르러 모든 책임감과 학습의욕을 잃어버리고 폐쇄적 대인관계로 인하여 반사회적이 되거나, 심지어는 문제아동이 될 가능성을 갖게 된다. 더욱이 이들의 대인관계의 특성이 어린 시절 부모의 양육방법을 통해 형성되고 평생 동안 지속된다는 점을 간과할 수 없다. 아동은 어린 시기에 부모와의 양육에서 어떠한 관계를 맺느냐에 따라 대인관계의 특성이 결정되기 때문이다. 이것은 쌍둥이 아동에게는 일반 아동과 똑같은 획일적인 양육방법보다는 쌍둥이 아동이라는 심리적인 환경에 적합한 양육방법에 관한 체계적인 연구가 요구됨을 의미한다. 이런 점을 고려하여 본 논문은 쌍둥이 자녀에 대한 이해와 쌍둥이 아동의 적응과 발달에 영향을 미치는 기질과 부모의 양육태도의 심리적인 특성에 초점을 맞추었다. 그리고 대상관계론의 선구자적 위치를 차지하고 있는 해리 스택 설리반(Harry Stack Sullivan)의 대상관계론의 이론에 기대어 쌍둥이 자녀를 둔 부모가 쌍둥이 아동을 양육하는데 바람직한 대안이 될 수 있음을 제시한다.
