To learn and use fluently the language of a country, besides outstanding language skills, cultural understanding that becomes fundamental of language, is indispensable. However, since learning all of the cultural aspects can be too difficult due to its extensive nature, discussion of "what" and "how" to teach is an important issue associated with qualitative enhancement of Korean language. Accordingly, this research intends to suggest educational method of Korean culture using poems, with advanced learners as subject. In particular, focusing on culture in history, it aims to suggest effective eduction methods that integrate language and culture, by selecting a poem reflecting various cultural elements, in relation with cultural phenomenon of contemporary Korean society. The study of history and culture has many advantages. First, it can help in-depth understanding of various cultural phenomenon unexplainable in Korean society through diachronic approach, beyond understanding of historical facts. Second, it can resolve communication problems due to lack of by understanding Korean's underlying niversal value and mindset. In this study, based on such fact, we examined significance of culture in history education as culture education contents. In addition, we used poems for effective education of Korean culture, which was of great value in information utilization and methodical aspect because poem is a highly valuable language information formed based on historical background. In this study, we selected and suggested poems for advanced learners, and extracted education contents of language and culture by each period. In addition, we suggested a practical teaching-learning method that can provide integrated education of language and culture using Kim, Kyu Dong's "Mother's letter from North" which is appropriate for Korean war and the division of Korea

한 나라의 언어를 배우고 유창하게 사용하기 위해서는 뛰어난 언어 실력도 요구되지만 언어의 기반이 되는 문화 이해가 필수적이다. 그러나 외국인 학습자에게 폭넓은 문화를 모두 교육하는 것은 쉽지 않기에 ‘무엇’을, ‘어떻게’ 가르치느냐의 논의는 매우 중요한 문제다. 이에 본 연구는 고급 수준의 외국인 학습자를 대상으로 시를 활용한 한국어 문화 교육의 방법을 제안하고자 한다. 특히, 그동안 수업 현장에서 소홀히 다뤄왔던 역사문화에 주목하여 현대 한국 사회의 문화를 바탕으로 역사문화의 요소를 반영한 시를 선정하여 언어와 문화를 통합한 효율적인 교육 방법을 제시하는 데 목적이 있다. 역사문화의 학습은 단순히 역사적 사실에 대한 이해를 넘어 현대 한국 사회에서쉽게 설명할 수 없는 다양한 문화 현상을 통시적으로 접근하여 심층적인 이해를 도울 수 있고, 한국인의 기저에 깔린 보편적인 가치관과 사고방식을 이해하여 문화 능력 부재로 인한 의사소통 문제를 해결하는 등 여러 이점이 있다. 이를 바탕으로 문화 교육 내용으로서 역사문화 교육의 의의를 밝혀보았다. 또한 효율적인 한국어 문화 교육을 위해 시를 활용하였는데 시는 역사적 배경을 바탕으로 형성된 고급 언어 자료라는 점에서 역사와 시가 접점을 이루고 있고, 자칫 딱딱하고 무미건조하게 진행될 수 있는 역사 수업에 시를 활용하면 학습자들에게 흥미로운 수업을 제공할 수 있다는 점에서 교육 자료로서 활용 가치가 매우 높아 보인다. 여기에서는 고급 학습자를 위한 시를 선정하여 제시하고, 각 시대에 따라 언어와 문화의 교육 내용을 추출하였다. 선정된 시 가운데 한국전쟁과 남북 분단 등을 학습하기에 적합한 김규동의 ‘북에서 온 어머님 편지’를 활용하여 언어와 문화를 통합적으로 교육할 수 있는 실제적인 교수-학습 방법을 제시하였다. 나아가 학습자가 스스로 문화 차이를 인정하고 타문화를 포용하는 상호문화이해 능력을 향상시킬 수 있는 가능성을 모색하였다. 이는 기존의 문화 교육 방법과 달리 역사문화를 중심으로 다양한 층위에서 언어와 문화를 아우르는 교육 내용과 방법을 새롭게 제시하였다는 점에서 의의가 있겠다.
