North Korea Science Fiction is a form of literature that is introduced to give shape to an ideal the society seeks. This is fit with a realizable fantasy that is one of genre characteristics of SF. Therefore, it is necessary to consider genre characteristics to establish a meaning of North Korea Science Fiction. Through this, the limit of existing studies focusing on explanation based on sociopolitical distinctiveness can be overcome. As a genre establishing existing science fiction systematically, ideological science fiction started to be mentioned in earnest while Hwang Jeongsang published Science Fiction Creation arranging creation methodology based on his fiction Green Ears. Therefore, this thesis analyzes Green Ears, so divides the characteristics of North Korea Ideological Science Fiction into three characteristics. First characteristic is inplementation using science for ‘the ideal man’. This is a common characteristic of North Korea Literary Art, but especially, is completely showed in ideological science fiction. This is distinguishing because this focuses on the realization of a desirable human character appropriate for an ideal society rather than futurity itself the fiction suggests. Second characteristic is the active reflection of political aim. If socialist realism theory is reflected, the fantastic futurity of ideological science fiction reflects the present desire and aim actively. This is fit with the general characteristics of North Korea Literature, so projects a political directing point. Third characteristic is a lag of awareness about science. Ideological science fiction uses scientific technology as the primary source, but does not depart from the instrumental use. This means that this fiction does not depart from early modern viewpoint recognizing Western scientific technology as a tool of national prosperity and military power. In North Korea, theoretical establishment of ideological science fiction and encouragement of creation are actively proceeded. However, the awareness of science is exclusive, and theory becomes doctrinaire, so diversity has been restricted since the 1990s. Nevertheless, the internalizing work of genre North Korea Ideological Science Fiction tries will be an important clue clarifying the flow of Korean SF from a unification cultural historical perspective.

북한의 과학환상소설은 사회가 추구하는 이상을 구체화하기 위해 도입된 문학의 형태다. 이는 SF의 장르적 특성 중 하나인 실현가능한 환상과도 맞닿아 있다. 그러므로 북한 과학환상소설의 의미를 규명하기 위해서는 장르적인 특성을 고려할 필요가 있는데, 이를 통해 정치사회적 특수성에 입각한 설명에 집중했던 기존 연구들의 한계를 극복할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다. 주체적 과학환상소설은 기존의 과학환상소설을 보다 체계적으로 정립한 장르로, 황정상이 자신의 소설 『푸른 이삭』을 바탕으로 창작방법론을 정리한 『과학환상소설창작』을 발간하면서 본격적으로 언급되기 시작했다. 그러므로 본고는 『푸른 이삭』을 분석함으로써 북한의 주체적 과학환상소설이 가진 특성을 다음과 같은 세 가지로 구분했다. 첫째, 과학을 활용한 ‘리상적 인간’ 구현. 이는 북한 문학예술의 공통된 특성이지만, 특히 주체적 과학환상소설에서는 전면적으로 드러났다. 이는 소설이 제시한 미래상 자체보다 이상적 사회에 어울리는 바람직한 인간상 구현에 관심을 두고 있다는 점에서 특징적이다. 둘째, 정책적 지향의 적극적인 반영. 사회주의 리얼리즘 이론을 반영하면 주체적 과학환상소설에서 제시하는 환상적인 미래상은 현재의 욕망과 지향을 적극적으로 반영한다. 이것이 북한 문학의 일반적인 특징과 맞물려 정책적 지향점을 투사하고 있다. 셋째, 과학에 대한 인식의 지체현상. 주체적 과학환상소설은 과학기술을 주된 소재로 활용하지만, 이는 어디까지나 도구적 활용의 차원에서 벗어나지 못했다. 이는 서구의 과학기술을 수용하여 부국강병의 수단으로 인식했던 근대 초기의 관점에서 크게 벗어나지 못한 것이다. 북한에서는 주체적 과학환상소설의 이론적 정립과 창작에 대한 장려가 적극적으로 이루어졌다. 그러나 과학에 대한 인식이 폐쇄적이고, 이론이 교조화되면서 1990년대 이후로 다양성이 제한되고 말았다. 그럼에도 불구하고 북한의 주체적 과학환상소설이 시도한 장르의 내면화 작업은 통일문학사적 관점에서 보았을 때 한국 SF의 흐름을 명확하게 하는 중요한 단서가 될 것이다.
