This thesis tries to the explore 禽言體詩 (Bird-Song Poetry) by negating the focus on the bird in existing studies and instead by focusing on bird song or 禽言. This is because in Bird-Song Poetry, the letters used to symbolize the bird song is more important than what bird was used as the subject for poetry. First, Bird-Song Poetry forms its subject by a bird cry portrayed in the poetry or with bird name. Even if the same bird is used as a topic, if a bird song is written differently, the contents will also differ. However, poems with the same bird song will tend to contain similar contents overall. Secondly, it can be regarded that because of bird song’s influence, considerable limitations exist in the contents and background of Bird-Song Poetry. This is because a bird cry is more suited for subjects which evolve around reality compared to poems with decorative backgrounds or poems about distant worlds, segregated from reality. As bird cries are sounds which can be easily heard in daily lives from anywhere, it is treated in a very familiar form. Due to these characteristics of bird songs, I wish to explore the way subjects and backgrounds are shown in limited ways. Lastly, because Bird-Song Poetry belongs to a large category of Jap-che (Miscellaneous Style) Poetry, it can be regarded as having an amusing quality. Due to the effects taking place within the poem content and the ambiguous meaning of bird sounds it has the effect of arousing interest. Therefore, even if another poem exists with the same subject matter, because of insertion of bird sounds, it can achieve additional effects to ordinary poems of other subject matter.

禽言體詩를 연구한 기존의 논문은 대체로 새 자체에 초점을 맞추고 있다. 그러나 본고에서는 금언체시의 직접적인 제재인 禽言, 새소리에 초점을 맞추어 살펴보고자 한다. 금언체시에서는 어떤 새를 제재로 시를 썼느냐가 아니라 새소리를 표기하는 데에 어떤 글자를 사용하였는지가 중요하기 때문이다. 따라서 본고에서는 금언에 주안을 두고 금언체시에서 금언이 어떠한 기능을 하고 있는지 살펴보았다. 먼저 금언체시에서 금언은 주제의 형성과 한정의 기능을 하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 금언체시에서는 금언의 한자어에 따라 그 금언체시의 내용이 달라지기 때문에 금언은 그 시의 주제를 형성한다고 보았다. 금언체시는 주제의 범주가 그렇게 넓지 않은데 이것이 금언의 특성과 연관이 있다. 새의 울음소리는 현실과 가까운 소재이기 때문에 현실과 가까운 주제를 다루는 것이 더 적합한 것이다. 일상과 가깝기 때문에 더욱 친숙한 형태로 다룰 수 있다. 또 우리나라의 새와 관련된 설화의 특성상 금언체시의 내용은 안타까운 사연을 가진 경우가 많다. 때문에 금언체시의 주제는 한정적인 모습으로 나타난다. 다음으로 금언은 금언체시에서 유희적인 기능을 한다. 이런 유희적인 기능은 금언체시에서 금언과 금언의 내용이 이중적인 의미를 가지고 있다는 사실에 주목한 것이다. 금언과 금언의 내용 사이의 이중적인 의미는 작가가 하는 문자유희에서의 유희성뿐만 아니라 독자가 작가가 의도한 문자 유희를 풀어가는 과정에서 또 다른 유희성을 가지고 있다고 보았다. 또한 새의 모습과 그 금언의 모순적인 상황 속에서 유희성이 나타나는 모습도 볼 수 있었다.
