The symbolic and religious concept on the sun and moon that the primitive mankind felt for long period time were reflected in the process of establishing the ancient country and political system of China. Solar and lunar eclipse were considered to be the natural disaster to the supreme ruler or the world that the supreme ruler ruled, and ceremonies were prepared to relieve the disaster. In that process, the concept on solar and lunar eclipse became a belief, and it became more solid through political standardization and ideological theorization. Korea adopted the bureaucratic system and the political culture of China to also accept their concept and ceremony. From the period of the Three States to the Joseon Dynasty era, the theory on solar and lunar eclipse was progressed in the direction of establishing and maintaining this symbolism. In the royal family, the collapse of the belief on solar and lunar eclipse was unwanted for the purpose of protecting the sovereign power symbolically. The theory of solar and lunar eclipse by the literary noblemen focused on solidifying the ideological theory. In the late Joseon Dynasty, the scientific thinking on the theory of solar and lunar eclipse spread due to the introduction of the Western astronomy. Nevertheless, most literary men tried to understand the solar and lunar eclipse within the Confucian political view until the late Joseon Dynasty. The literary noblemen used the theory of solar and lunar eclipse to contain the sovereign power, and were not able to completely break free from the medieval value on the scientific phenomenon. Thus, Korean literary men used the solar and lunar eclipse on poetry from the Goryeo Dynasty. From the Goryeo Dynasty to late Joseon Dynasty, Korean poems on solar and lunar eclipse were mostly about reflecting the idea on natural disaster and projecting the lyricism. Also, from the Goryeo Dynastry period, Korean literary men showed interest in the Confucian ideology and beauty of expression in the ｢Poem on Lunar Eclipse｣ by Lu Tong. Especially in the late Joseon Dynasty, there was a tendency to criticize the ｢Poem on Lunar Eclipse｣ based on the scientific epistemology.

우리나라 문인들은 고려시대부터 일식과 월식을 소재로 한 한시를 지속적으로 창작했다. 창작자들은 시대 정황과 정치적 지위, 학문적 성향이나 개인적 기질에 따라 형식과 내용에서 다른 모습을 보여주었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 고려시대부터 조선 후기까지 일월식을 소재로 한 한시 작품들의 양상은 중세적 災異觀의 반영과 공적 서정의 투영이라는 범주에서 크게 벗어나지 않았다. 일식과 월식은 왕실의 권위, 왕과 신하의 상하관계와 직결되는 정치적으로 민감한 상징이었기 때문에, 그 앞에서 자연발생적인 개인 서정은 극도로 제한되고 이데올로기적 공적 서정에 지배되었던 것이다. 조선 후기에는 자연 과학적 인식이 확고했던 문인 사대부들이 일월식의 중세적 災異觀과 과학적 인식 사이에서 고민하였다. 하지만 이들은 비록 일월식에 대한 미신적 관념에서는 확실히 벗어났지만, 심성론과 정치론적 측면에서 여전히 유학에 기반 한 중세적 가치관을 벗어나지 못했다. 더욱이 일월식의 정치적 상징성을 정면으로 반박할 수는 없었다. 이 때문에 이들은 일월식에 대한 救蝕禮를 자연에 대한 경외심과 인격 수양의 차원에서 긍정하는 등 절충적 인식 태도를 보였다. 이 과정에서 徐命膺과 李學逵는 盧仝의 ｢月食詩｣를 문학적 차원에서 공감하지 않고, 과학적 인식을 바탕으로 매우 비판적으로 평가했다. 이는 일식과 월식을 소재로 한 한국의 한시에서는 전혀 보이지 않는 현상이었다. 徐命膺과 李學逵는 자신들의 변화된 비판적 가치관을 직설적으로 드러내기 어려운 현실에서 특정 문인의 작품에 제한하여 우회적으로 표출하였던 것이다.
