This treatise deals with the viewpoint of literature in the traditional ages newly on the dimension of "the complementarity with politics." The traditional opinion of the art in the east Asia had pointed to the circular relation between the literature and the politics without any biased emphasis. But this opinion based on the metaphysical cosmology and focused on Ki(氣) had been damaged by various political opinions that prescribed the present age as a peaceful reign and at last the political opinion had established into the theory that literature have to describe Tao. This viewpoint of literature based on enlightenment theory had damaged fundamentally literary autonomy. But the relation between the literature and the politics could not be only representative. They must maintain the parallel relationship in which both of them complement and check each other. We, especially, focused on the fact that the meaning of existence of novels is the creation of "another reality" standing against the formal reality called politics. Through these arguments we conclude that the position of the literature to the politics is transcendental.

이 논문은 전통시대 문학관을 ‘정치와의 상보성’이라는 관점에서 새롭게 조명했다. 동양의 전통적인 예술관은 문학과 정치 어느 한 차원에 강조점을 두지 않는 원환적 관계를 지향했다. 하지만 기를 중심으로 한 형이상학적 우주론에 기반을 둔 이 관점은 당대를 태평성대로 인식하는 정치적 관점에 의해 훼손되어 재도론으로 정립되기에 이른다. 교화론에 입각한 이 문학관은 문학의 자율성을 근본적으로 훼손한다. 그런데 문학과 정치는 반영적 관계만 맺지는 않으며 서로를 보완하면서 견제하는 평행 관계를 유지해야만 한다. 우리는 특히 소설의 존재 의미가 정치라는 공식 현실에 대응하는 ‘다른 현실’을 창조한다는 점에 주목했다. 이를 통해 문학이 정치에 대해 갖는 독특한 초월적 지위를 확인하는 데에 이르렀다.
