Cultural diversity and radical change lead to diversification of modern art’s role and expression method. Since the 1980’s, installation art has become a field of art against traditional art expression and for proliferation of a new way of expression. Beginning from extending the concept of space for art work display, it is expanding its concept as a mixing genre of art in search of freedom and diversity to complex expressions to enable audience to have various sensory experiences. In this study, expressive characteristics of installation art were examined on the focus of this researcher’s works. By analyzing various expressive methods used for effective and sensory communication, a new approach to modern art was studied to actively come near to audience’s thoughts. The expressive method adopted for works were explained by classifying spacious arrangement and experience, change of place, temporality, and participation of audience. These adoption and classification of expressive method were trials for more effective communication with audience about this researcher’s theme of works to propose to think about the relationship between life and environment. The works are considered a space of more active communication for consciousness exchange by building a space to maximize audience’s experiential elements and making use of a creative process through audience’s active participation directly affecting composition of works. In addition, out of limited expressive method using a traditional art expression method, objet expression, and visual elements, benefits and functionality of exhibition composition to stimulate various senses of body were studied. It is considered that these application and practice of installation artistic expressive methods can present the direction of new art expression to effectively approach modern people who are accustomed to various stimuli.

문화의 다양화와 급속한 변화는 현대미술의 역할과 표현방식의 다양화로 이어지고 있다. 1980년대부터 시작된 설치미술은 전통적 미술표현 방식을 거부하며 새로운 표현의 확장에 앞장서고 있는 미술 분야이다. 설치미술은 작품이 전시되는 공간의 개념을 확장시키는 것을 시작으로 관객들이 다양한 감각적 체험을 가능하게 하는 복합적 표현에 이르기까지 자유로움과 다양성을 추구하는 혼합장르의 미술로 개념을 확장시키고 있다. 본 연구에서는 연구자의 도예 작품들을 중심으로 설치미술의 표현특성들을 살펴본다. 효과적인 의미전달과 감각적 소통을 위해 작품에 사용된 다양한 설치미술 표현방식에 대하여 분석함으로서, 관객의 사고에 적극적으로 다가갈 수 있는 현대미술의 새로운 접근방식에 대하여알아보기 위함이다. 작품에 적용된 표현방식은 공간적 구성과 체험, 장소의 변화, 시간성, 관객의 참여로 분류하여 설명하였다. 이와 같은 표현방식의 적용과 분류는 생명과 환경의 관계성에 대한 사고를 제안하는 연구자의 작품주제를 보다 효과적으로 관객과 소통하기 위한 시도들이었다. 관객의 체험적 요소를 극대화하는 공간의 구성과, 관객이 작품의 구성에 직접적 영향을 미치는 적극적 참여에 의한 창조 과정을 활용함으로서 전시장은 보다 적극적인 의식교류의 소통공간이 되는 것이다. 또한 전통적 미술표현방식인 오브제적 표현과 시각적 요소만을 사용한 제한적 표현 방식의 한계를 벗어나 신체의 다양한 감각을 자극하는 전시 구성이 갖는 장점과 가능성들을 연구하였다. 이러한 설치 미술적 표현법들의 응용과 실천은 다양한 자극에 길들여진 현대인들에게 효과적으로 다가갈 수 있는 새로운 미술 표현의 방향성을 제시할 수 있을 것이다.
