In the wake of industrialization and urbanization, furusato (hometown) songs become immensely popular, since people away from their furusato tend to long for it. However, upon reaching the urbanized and industrialized stage, the meaning of furusato becomes debased, and accordingly furusato songs lose their popularity. Interestingly, this hypothesis is not applicable to the fully urbanized and industrialized Japan of today. Furusato in the Japanese popular music industry retains its value in various genres, from ch’angga and enka to jazz and country music, and even dance pop and rap music. This study explores the phenomenon of Japanese furusato songs. By analyzing songs titled “Furusato” or “Longing for Furusato,” this paper explores how the images of furusato in Japanese popular songs have changed and continued, and what kinds of musical changes have occurred in furusato songs. It further examines the interrelations between these two kinds of changes.

산업화 도시화가 진행되는 시기에 고향을 주제로 하는 대중가요가 폭발적으로 인기를 누리는 것은 고향에의 향수가 떠난 사람에게 의미가 있기 때문이다. 하지만 이미 도시화가 완결된 상태에서는 고향의 의미는 퇴색되고 고향을 키워드로 하는 대중매체의 소비는 매력을 잃게 될 것이다. 그런데, 이 가설은 (산업화 도시화가 완결되었다고 여겨지는) 현대일본의 대중음악계에는 해당되지 않는 듯 보인다. 창가와 엔카는 물론이고, 재즈풍과 컨트리풍, 댄스팝과 랩음악으로까지 일본대중음악계에서 고향의 이용가치는 현재에도 다양하다. 본 논문에서는 고향이 그 이용가치를 잃지 않고 시대적 변화를 넘어 현재까지도 지속적으로 생산 소비되는 일본대중음악계의 후루사토 가요를 분석하여 음악적 변화 및 고향이미지의 변화와 연속성을 밝히고, 그 연관성을 서술하고자 한다.
