Contents In the genre paintings of the late Joseon era in the 19th century, many forms of entertainment and joy of life are found. Danwon Shin Yun-bok and Hyewon Kim Hong-do who painted many pieces featuring the daily lives of the common and life of art, offer a brief and delicate story of the common. This study investigated genre paintings of the late Joseon era and attempted to review the dynamics and atmosphere through picturing storytelling of an exciting scene in paintings by Danwon and Hyewon through the dances featured. By studying the connection among the origin of dances, dressing, music and dance moves, this study was able to surmise the change of traditional Korea art made through the process of succession. Even though this study focused its studying mainly on genre paintings by Danwon and Hyewon, there are not many pieces that survived up to date other than the genre paintings by Danwon and Hyewon. Such allow the genre paintings by Danwon and Hyewon the most important items that is preserved as the original records that feature art of the common in their daily lives and acknowledge the value of traditions through linking with the form of dancing that is succeeded up to this date. In addition to the studying dances of late Joseon era featured in the genre paintings studied in this study, the study of dance origins that are found in wall paintings and amrita painting of the pre-historic era is considered to be the starting point of a wide range of studies that will realize Korean dancing as a form of contents.

19세기 조선시대 풍속화에는 서민의 생활풍속부터 다양한 놀이와 삶의 유희가 고스란히 담겨있다. 민중들의 생활상과 풍류적 삶을 유독 많이 그렸던 신윤복과 김홍 도는 그림을 통해 서민들의 일상을 간략하고도 치밀하게 이야기하여 준다. 본 연구는 조선후기의 풍속화가 단원과 혜원의 그림에 담겨진 춤사위를 풍속화의 스토리텔링을 통해 흥이 고취되어 있는 상황을 상상해 보고 한국춤이 추어지는 정취를 생동감 있게 살펴보았다. 이는 현재 추어지는 춤의 유래, 복식, 음악, 춤사위의 연계적 고찰을 통해 당시 춤의 원형과 비교해 봄으로써 한국 전통예술의 전승과정에서의 변모된 과정을 짐 작할 수 있었다. 비록 연구는 단원과 혜원의 풍속화에 담긴 춤만으로 다소 제한된 범위에서의 고 찰이지만, 고분벽화나 궁중의 무보 외에 구전으로 전승되어 온 한국의 민속예술은 그 다지 많은 사료를 남겨두지 않고 있다. 따라서 단원과 혜원의 조선 풍속화 속에 담긴 일상은 서민예술을 보여 줄 수 있는 중요한 기록으로 현재 전승된 춤과의 연계를 통해 전통의 가치를 인식시켜 주는 중요한 원형으로 남아 있는 셈이다. 한편 본 연구를 통해 풍속화에 담긴 조선후기 춤의 연구 외에도, 거슬러 올라가 선사시대 벽화와 감로탱화 등 중요한 기록에서 보이는 춤의 원형 탐구는 한국춤의 콘텐츠의 실현을 위해 앞으로 도 많은 연구가 기대되어지는 영역이라 사료된다.
