The purpose of this study was to develop and validate Korean students’ reading motivation. I also investigated how the factors of reading motivation were related to reading activity (e.g. reading frequency and reading diversity) and reading achievement (e.g. self-reported levels of reading performance) in terms of concurrent and predictive validity. A 61-item Motivation for Reading Questionnaire was developed including dimensions of 1) competence beliefs (e.g. reading self-efficacy, challenge, avoidance), 2) values and goals (e.g. reading curiosity, involvement, importance, competition, grade, recognition), and social aspects of reading (e.g. social reasons for reading, reading compliance). A total of 313 middle school students were responded items and confirmatory factor analysis was conducted. Also, different factor models were compared based on chi-square difference test and fit indices (CFI, TLI, RMSEA). The results showed that within the ability beliefs dimension, a three-factor model fit the data well. In the values and goals dimension, a six-factor model improved significantly, compared to the other alternative models in terms of chi-square difference tests. However, fit indices did not yield an appropriate model fit. In the social dimension, two-factor model showed a best fit to the data. Results confirmed the previous research that motivation for reading assesses multidimensional aspects of various purposes of reading. Most of the factors of reading motivation (except avoidance scale) were positively related to frequency and diversity of reading, as well as positive reading attitude and reading achievement.

이 연구에서는 먼저 우리나라 중학생을 대상으로 읽기동기의 척도를 개발하고 타당화하였다. 타당화 분석 결과 개발된 읽기동기 문항의 하위요인들은 회피, 순응 요인을 제외하고는 긍정적 읽기태도와 정적 상관을 보였고, 읽기활동, 읽기성취와도 정적인 상관을 보였다. 이 연구에서는 또한 읽기동기의 차원 및 하위요인들의 구조를 이론에 입각하여 심층적으로 분석하려 하였다. 선행연구에 의하면 읽기동기는 능력관련 신념의 차원(효능감, 도전, 회피), 가치-성취목표의 차원(흥미, 몰입, 중요성, 경쟁, 인정, 성적), 사회적 목표의 차원(사회적 상호작용, 순응)으로 구성되는데, 이 연구에서는 각 차원아래에서 요인구조를 여러 경쟁모형들의 비교를 통하여 알아보았다. 확인적 요인분석과 카이제곱의 차이 검증, 모형적합도 지수를 근거로 할 때 능력관련 신념의 차원에서는 효능감-도전-회피는 3요인 모형이 가장 자료에 부합하였고, 가치-성취목표의 차원에서는 6요인 모형이 가장 자료에 부합하였으나 적합도 지수가 양호한 수준에는 미치지 못하였다. 사회적 목표의 차원에서는 사회적 상호작용-순응의 2요인 모형이 자료를 잘 설명하고 적합도 지수도 양호한 것으로 나타났다.
