This study attempts to analyze inductively the differences of the way in which Korea and Japan understand each other through the mass media based on manner of reporting and image frames. The result of the study shows that there exists consistent differences in the way in which the mass media of both countries deal with head of state of each other’s country in conflict relations according to the press nationality and its ideological orientation. First, with regards to manner of reporting, media manners, there was consistent differences in the way in which the mass media of the two countries deals with each other’s head of state, although it shows high interests in the heads of each state. Especially, the progressive press in both nations is much more flexible in dealing with the head of the other country. Next, in image frames too, all Korean Press regards Minister Abe as very negatively regardless of their ideological orientation. In contrast, there is some difference in the report on president Park’s image frames in Japanese press according to ideological orientation. It turned out that while the Press of both countries show some difference in terms of reporting strategies, each country’s press basically pursue their own interests. However, further discussions are needed in order to figure out where such strategies come from and what they mean, given that the two countries’ conflict is inseperable from the obvious fact that Japan is a assault country, whereas Korea is affected one.

이 연구는 한일 양국의 언론이 상대국 국가정상을 바라보는 방식의 차이를 보도양상과 이미지 프레임에 초점을 두고 귀납적 내용분석을 시도한 것이다. 한일 양국 언론이 외교적 갈등 상대국 국가 정상에 대해서 다루는 방식은 언론 미디어의 국적과 해당 언론의 이념적 지향성에 따라 일정한 차이를 보여주고 있었다. 먼저, 보도양상에서 한일 언론은 상대국 국가 정상에 대하여 높은 관심을 보이고 있는 가운데, 이를 다루는 방식에 있어서 일정한 차이가 있었다. 무엇보다 한일 공히 진보지가 보수지에 견주어 상대국 국가 정상에 대한 인식이 상대적으로 유연하다는 사실을 알 수 있었다. 다음으로, 이미지 프레임에 있어서도 아베 총리에 대한 한국 언론의 이미지 프레임은 진보와 보수라는 진영의 논리를 초월하여 부정 일색으로 나타나고 있었다. 이에 비해, 박근혜 대통령에 대하여 일본 언론은 진보와 보수라는 이념적 지향성에 따라 이미지 프레임 구축에 일정한 차이를 보여주고 있었다. 외교적 갈등 상대국 국가 정상에 대한 한일 언론 보도의 차이를 통해 기본적으로 한일 언론은 자국의 국가 이익을 우선적으로 반영하면서도 그 추구 전략에 있어서는 일정한 차이가 있음을 알 수 있었다. 다만, 한일 양국의 외교적 갈등이 과거사에 기반한 가해국과 피해국의 입장과 따로 분리될 수 없다는 점에서 그러한 전략의 차이가 어디에서 비롯된 것인지, 그리고 무엇을 의미하는지에 대해서는 지속적인 논의가 필요할 것으로 보인다.
