This study aimed to analyze description on 'history of transportation' in history textbook for middle school. The author summarized parts to be considered into three, when textbook is revised. ① As the textbook does not describe transportation operation system, it should mention station(郵驛), operation of roads managed by government, and transportation organization of Silla dynasty representing ancient nations. And the textbook describes Balhae's transportation roads towards foreign countries and foreign trade of Unified Silla, giving importance on them. So it would be necessary to list map about mainline roads of Unified Silla. ② As illustration to explain exchanges with foreign countries in Goryeo, cultural relics recently found in the water should be actively used. And as background of such exchanges with foreign countries, domestic transportation policy and transportation roads should be considered. ③ In the part for Joseon dynasty, differently from existing periods, transportation system such as Yeokcham(驛站: post station) system and Jowoon(漕運:transportation through water) system are introduced but role of transportation roads is limited to administrative and military roads. This limitation would be overcome to some degree, if networks of water and land transportation roads to connect main cities or regular markets(場市) are suggested, explaining development of distribution economy in the late Joseon. Thus, parts that require revision and supplement in present textbook of history reflect study level and limitation of transportation history as they are. When this is considered, study on history of transportation in the future should approach view of segment in integrated way, that is, land and water, foreign and domestic, and transportation system and transportation road. At the same time, popularization of study performance should not be neglected. And for students to specifically learn space of Korean history and historical activity in the history, apart from transportation system, it is suggested that textbook or 『Historical appended map』should include historical map where land and water transportation network can be identified.

본고는 중학교 역사교과서에 서술된 교통사 관련 내용에 관한 분석을 목적으로 작성하였다. 본문에서 서술한 내용 중 교과서 개정작업 때에 고려해 봐야 할 사항을 세 부분으로 나누어 정리하면 다음과 같다. ①고대국가의 교통운영체제에 관한 내용이 빠져 있기 때문에 삼국을 대표하여 신라왕조의 郵驛 설치와 官道의 운영 그리고 교통기구의 편제 정도는 언급해야 한다. 그리고 발해의 대외 교통로나 통일신라의 대외 교역활동이 강조되어 서술된 만큼, 통일신라의 간선 교통로에 관한 역사지도도 함께 수록할 필요가 있다. ②고려시대 대외교류활동을 설명하는 삽화로 최근에 출수된 수중 문화유산을 적극 활용해야 할 것이다. 또한 이러한 대외교류활동을 위한 배경으로 국내의 교통정책과 교통로도 염두에 두어야 한다. ③조선시대 파트에서는 이전 시기와 달리 교통제도(역참제와 조운제)를 소개하지만, 여전히 교통로의 역할을 행정·군사로에 제한하고 있다. 이러한 한계도 조선후기 유통경제의 발전을 설명하면서 주요 도시나 場市를 연결하는 수륙교통로의 분포망을 제시한다면 어느 정도 극복될 것이다. 이와 같이 역사교과서에서 수정 및 보완이 필요한 부분은 기본적으로 교통사의 연구 수준과 한계가 그대로 반영되어 있다. 이 점을 감안하면, 향후 교통사 연구는 육상과 수상, 대외와 국내 그리고 교통제도와 교통로의 분절적 관점을 통합적 방향에서 접근함과 동시에 연구 성과를 대중화하는 작업도 소홀히 하지 말아야 할 것이다. 그리고 학생들이 한국사의 공간과 그 속에서의 역사 활동을 구체적으로 학습하기 위해 교통제도는 차치하더라도, 적어도 교과서나『역사부도』에 수륙교통망을 확인할 수 있는 역사지도는 꼭 수록할 것을 제안한다.
