This dissertation is for the academic study on Goam(고암), a dharma disciple of Baek Yongseong. There have been a few studies on the Seon thought, the thought of religious precepts of Goam, but not for the researches on Goam’s life and the relevance to Baek Yongseong(백용성). So I had a purpose to shed new light on Goam’s identification because of this reason, I tried to get close to the point of view that Goam’s identification was related to Baek Yongseong, his dharma teacher. Of course it is possible to see the life of Goam from Goam’s point of view, but I wanted to research on the relevance to Baek Yongseong. In this position, I explained it in the aspects of Yongtap Meditation Center, Ethnic Buddhism, Practice, Precepts, and Succession etc in detail. To study on Goam synthetically, Multiple-approaches are needed though, I tried to get close to the point of view as a dharma disciple of Yongseong in this dissertation. Yongtap Meditation Center(龍塔禪院) is a hermitage of Hae’in Temple which was established in 1947, in a purpose to protect Baek Yongseong’s Stupa. I looked over the fact that there was Goam’s effort in protection and re-establishment of this hermitage. And I focused on, in the ethic Buddhism, the his relationship with Dharma propagation center which Yongseong set up in the middle of 1910, which gave the motive to Goam for his priesthood, and Goam’s activities at Buddhist Academy(禪學院), Buddhists’ Society(禪友共濟會), Dharma Association(遺敎法會), the birth places of the ethnic Buddhism. When it comes to practice, I found out that Goam practiced under Baek Yongseong from 1921 to the early 1930. So, Goam exhaustively learned the teaching from Baek Yongseong. In the aspect of precept, the religious precept of Goam was based on Baek Yongseong’s thought ‘the accordance of three doctrines(三學一致)’. For the part of succession, I could find out that there was the record Goam had a dharma transmission from Bae Yongseong through the traditional question and approval process at Naewon hermitage of Tongdo Temple in 1938. I was able to find out that Goam’s dharma from Baek Yongseong was transmitted to Daewon, Mun Seongjun etc. I think this dissertation could give a clue to understand Goam’s life, his thought and so forth. I look forward to having this research to be helpful for the studies on the thought of Baek Yongsong, a disciple of Baek Yongseong.

본 고찰은 백용성의 전법제자인 고암을 학문적으로 연구하는 글이다. 지금껏 고암에 대해서는 선사상, 계율사상에 대한 일부 연구가 있었지만 고암에 대한 생애사, 백용성과의 관련성 등은 거의 연구되지 않았다. 필자는 이런 전제하에서 고암의 정체성을 재조명하기 위한 목적을 갖고, 고암의 정체성을 그의 전법사인 백용성과의 관련성이라는 관점에서 접근하였다. 고암의 생애사를 고암의 관점에서도 볼 수 있지만 백용성과의 연관성을 통해서도 접근이 가능하다고 보았기 때문이다. 이런 입론에서 구체적인 서술은 용탑선원, 민족불교, 수행, 계율, 계승 등의 관점에서 서술하였다. 고암을 종합적으로 연구하려면 다면적인 접근이 필요하겠지만 필자는 이 글에서는 용성의 법제자라는 관점에서 접근하였다. 龍塔禪院은 백용성의 비석을 수호하기 위해 1947년에 세워진 해인사의 산내 암자이다. 이 암자의 수호 및 재건에 고암의 노력이 있었음을 살펴보았다. 그리고 민족불교에서는 고암의 출가 동기를 제공한 1910년대 중반 경 용성이 세운 임제종 포교당에서의 인연과 민족불교의 산실인 禪學院, 禪友共濟會, 遺敎法會에서의 고암의 활동을 주목하였다. 수행에 있어서는 고암은 1921년부터 1930년대 초반까지 백용성의 회상에서 수행을 하였음을 찾아내었다. 그래서 고암은 백용성의 가르침을 철저하게 체득하였음을 알 수 있었다. 계율에서는 고암의 계율사상은 백용성의 三學一致 사상에서 기인하였음을 추출하였다. 계승에서는 고암이 1938년 통도사 내원암에서 전통적인 문답, 인가의 과정을 통해 백용성으로부터 傳法한 기록을 확인할 수 있었다. 백용성의 법을 받은 고암은 그 법을 대원, 문성준 등에게 전수하였음을 찾을 수 있었다. 본 고찰은 고암의 생애, 사상 등을 이해함에 있어서 하나의 단초를 제공할 수 있을 것이다. 이 연구가 백용성의 사상, 백용성 문도 연구에도 참고가 되길 기대한다.
