This study aims to examine the modern understanding of filial piety in Won-Buddhism, religion founded in Korea. After many years of searching for the truth and undergoing ascetic practices, Sotaesan(1891-1943), the Founding Master of Won-Buddhism, attained supreme enlightenment in 1916. Won-Buddhism is now recognized as one of four major religions in Korea and is growing worldwide. Similar to other Eastern traditions, the virtue of filial piety is emphasized in Won-Buddhism. According to Sotaesan, although the practice of Hyo(filial piety,孝) may vary according to the era, the spirit of filial piety will continue throughout the ages. One of the main teachings in Won-Buddhism is the Fourfold Grace which includes the Grace of Parents. Filial piety is one of the main concepts in the section on the Grace of Parents. Jeongsan(1900-1962), the second Prime Dharma Master of Won-Buddhism, taught that the way to practice filial piety was to show gratitude to one's parents, which is accomplished by awakening to the Fourfold Grace. Daesan(1914-1998), the third Prime Dharma Master of Won-Buddhism, filial piety and benevolence and is therefore known as the sage of filial piety. This study will be an important step to present the concept of Won-Buddhism's thoughts of filial piety.

본 연구의 목적은 원불교 효사상의 현대적 이해에 도움이 되고자하는데 있다. 원불교는 1916년 소태산(1891-1943)의 대각에 의해 한국에서 개교되어 세계로 뻗어가고 있는 종교로서 국내 4대 종교의 하나로 자리하고 있다. 또한 원불교는 모든 종교에서 그렇듯이 원불교의 교리와 실천이 담긴 경전에서 효(孝)를 강조하고 있다. 소태산은 효가 그 형식은 시대에 따라 다르나 효의 정신은 어느 시대에나 변함없이 활용되어야 한다고 밝히며 효를 강조하였다. 더불어 소태산은 4은 중 부모은에 원불교의 효를 밝혔다. 소태산의 뒤를 이은 정산(1900-1962)은 효는 보은의 도를 행하는 보은행에 있으며 효의 실행은 사은의 모든 은혜를 발견하는데 있다고 하였다. 3대 종법사인 대산(1914-1998)은 효와 자비를 강조하며 효의 성자라 할 수 있을 정도로 효를 중요시하였다. 본 연구를 통하여 소태산과 정산, 대산에 이르기까지 3대에 걸쳐서 원불교가 표방하는 효사상을 대외에 인식시킬 수 있는 소중한 계기가 되었으면 한다.
