It is hard to deny that the South-North Korean relationship is in turning point. The factors of the turning point is from the changes of the global political environment such as the end of the cold war from the demolition of communist countries to the transformation of the South-North Korea relationship rooted from the structural crisis of North Korea and changes of the cognition on the relationship.
This essay is derived from the consciousness of current political problems introduced above and is about the analysis of current Northern East Asia polity and of the South-North Korean relationship and of how to approach to the cooperation of South-North.
Pursuing alternatives based upon peace should be more preferred than logics relied upon the concept of power. For instance, we need to consider the restoration of trust for peaceful coexistence, economic development through mutual cooperation, and mitigation of military competition in Northern East Asia. In long term, things requested for the unification of Korea are the consensus on the reason of the unification, and the blue print of the unified nation, and the analysis of the conditions of the unification, and the strategy of developing favorable environment to it.
This essay concludes that minimization of tensions between the two countries is important to the management of divided nations. Neither wars nor unification from absorption by one country is not an ideal way. Mutual coexistence, rationality, and fine-tuning approaches are the factors of unification strategy.

오늘날 남북관계는 전환기를 맞이하고 있다. 이 전환기를 만들어낸 요소는 냉전의 붕괴와 사회주의권의 몰락이라는 국제환경에서부터 북한체제의 위기와 남북한간의 역관계의 변화, 그리고 남북한 정권과 체제에 대한 인식변화라는 국내적 조건들에 이르기까지 다양하고 포괄적이며 구조적이다.
우리의 분단구조는 두 측면을 갖고 있는데, 하나는 남북한간의 적대관계이며 다른 하나는 남북한간 각각의 체제 내에서의 냉전질서라 할 것이다.
이제 탈냉전의 세계사적 변화와 세계화 및 지역화시대의 새로운 조류 속에서 민족의 생존과 발전을 도모해야 하는 과제에 직면해 있다고 할 수 있다.
이 글은 이러한 문제의식에서 한반도를 둘러싼 주변정세의 변화가 주는 남북한에 대한 함의와 그에 따른 남북한관계 개선 및 협력에 접근해 가는 기본방향을 모색하는데 그 목적이 있다.
남북한은 평화적인 방법 그리고 당사자 해결원칙에 입각하여 남북한간의 문제를 해결하도록 함께 노력해야 하겠다.
이제 우리는 분단질서의 평화적 관리가 소중함을 깨닫는다. 전쟁과 같은 파괴적인 방법이나 급격한 흡수통일과 같은 일방적 방법에 의해서가 아니라 상호 공존하며 점진적이고 이성적인 방법과 절차에 의한 통일과정의 소중함이 더없이 중요해진 것이다.
남북분단구조를 개선하지 않고는 우리가 바라는 세계화가 불가능하다고 할 때 통일을 앞당기기 위한 개혁은 시급하다.
