Since its establishment in 1947, LG Chem, Ltd. has maintained consistent, deficit-free growth for the past 60 years. This research attempts to explore the means by which this company has been able to continuously achieve such remarkable performance, with particular attention given to the aspect of strategic responses of a company. As a single longitudinal case study looking at the influence of management on a firm’s performance, we analyze the company using the three dimensions of strategy, management, and culture. We find that the growth of LG Chem, Ltd is due to several factors. First, in terms of strategy, LG Chem, Ltd. was found to have a markedly unique and multi-faceted business portfolio, along with what can be called an “early bird perspective”. Next, in regard to its administrative aspect, the company was shown to practice an “execution promotion type” management process, and to consist of a “team-work oriented” personnel. Finally, in relation to its cultural point of view, LG Chem, Ltd. was noted as having organizational loyalty, and an overall positive company milieu. Interaction among three growth elements is found to be influential in the firm’s performance. These are: ‘innovative orientedness’, ‘community spirit’ and, lastly, ‘adaptation to change’. Although it may be difficult to generalize the results of this research as it is based on the single case study of LG Chem, Ltd., we hope that it could contribute to the field, as it enhances existing literature through a deeper analysis of various organizational dimensions which include strategy, management, and culture.

LG화학은 1947년 창업 이래 지난 60여 년간 한 번도 적자를 내지 않고 지속적으로 성장을 이어온 기업이다. 본 연구는 LG화학이 이렇게 지속적으로 성과를 이루어온 요인이 무엇인지를 밝히고 환경의 변화에 따라 기업이 어떻게 대응을 하고 이 과정에서 기업의 전략적 선택이 성과에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 분석하고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 LG화학 단일 회사의 복수 사례를 전략경영의 주요 변수인 전략, 관리, 문화적 차원에서 분석하였다. 다각화를 통한 사업 포트폴리오의 확장 및 선도적인 기술개발이라는 전략적 차원, 팀웍 지향형 인재개발과 실행 촉진형의 조직 관리, 그리고 긍정적 사고 및 조직 충성도 제고를 위한 기업 문화 등이 주요한 변수로 찾을 수 있었다. 세 요인들은 각각 상호작용을 조직 내에서 일으키며 혁신지향성, 변화에의 적응력, 그리고 공동체 의식이라는 요인들로 표출되면서 LG화학의 성과를 견인해 오고 있었다. 본 연구를 통하여 얻은 시사점들을 정리하여 향후 한국의 기업 경영 및 학술 차원에서의 새로운 도전들에 대응하는 과정들을 제시하였다.
