This study investigates the short run and long run performance of the IPO stocks listed in Korea Exchange (KRX) during the period from 2001 to 2007. Especially, this study attempts to relate the return performance of IPO stocks to the information revealed from the book building process in which institutional investors participate. The IPO prices which are determined in the book building process are almost 25% lower than the guideline price suggested by the underwriters but almost same as the average price derived from the book building process. This fact indicates that the book building process plays a significant role in exchanging information over the fair IPO price between IPO companies and outside investors. In the short run such as period like the first day of IPO or one month after IPO, those proxy variables containing information about risk of IPO stocks have positive relationship with the return performance. However, most of short run abnormal returns disappear in the long run.

본 연구는 2001년부터 2007년까지 기간 동안 한국거래소의 유가증권시장에서 최초 공모된주식을 대상으로 수요예측을 통해 기관투자자로부터 입수된 기업 가치에 관한 정보와 공모주의장단기 성과와의 관계를 분석해 보고자 하였다. 최초공모주의 확정공모가격은 공모주의 주관사가 제시한 기준가격에 비해 약 25% 낮게 책정되었으나 동 가격은 수요예측과정에서 도출된 가중평균가격과 유사한 수준이었다. 이러한 사실은 수요예측과정이 적정 주당 가치에 관한 공개기업과 외부 투자자간의 정보 교환에 있어서 중요한 역할을 수행한다는 점을 시사한다. 상장당일이나 상장 후 1개월 등 단기적으로 최초공모주는 30% 내외의 초과수익률을 올렸으며 최초공모주의 불확실성을 대리하는 변수들과 이러한 단기간의 성과 간에는 정(+)의 상관관계가 존재하였다. 그러나 대부분의 단기성과는 1년 내에 사라지는 것으로 관찰되었다.
